I searched the forums for about 2 hours and I never found a solid answer to this question.

If Nvidia or ATi released a better videocard say like a GTX200 Mobile would be able to upgrade our GPU's from the 9800GTS.

I love my laptop but after coming from a HD4850 crossfire and a HD4870 it seems lacking in the graphic dept especially @ 1920x1200. It just kind of bugs me knowing my 9800GTSM is slower than my old 8800GTS 512mb. :(

Also can you overclock the CPU? I was looking into getting an X9100 from ebay I found one for like $450 and I'd assume you could just raise the multiplier?

No, you cant upgrade the vid card. So your pretty much SOL there.

And as to the desktop/laptop transition...have you seen the size and power differences in the cards your talking about. For what we have in these machines we do pretty well. You Desktop 8800GTS wouldnt even fit in a notebook nor would the notebook be able to power the thing very long before it died or caught on fire.

We have very limited space, and the preformance even on a 9800m GT in SLI is still inferior to last generations desktop video cards, but for the power/heat/size limitation i think its pretty bloody good preformance... even on mobile GTS cards that are the lowest rung of the high end cards.

Your video card is soldered on to the motherboard. Too hard to unsolder then resolder a new one. God Bless :)

OMG how did you get the R&D's 98 800gts thats not out for another 27 years  :p

Yeah its pretty much the same (close enough anyways)

Still supports my statement our 9800mgts is inferior to the last gen 9800 desktop card and is only comparable to the mid level GPU of that era.

We're always going to be behind the curve with things like that, but we also have the option to unplug and go spend a day somewhere else with out lugging around a 100lb desktop.

So no worries, we pay more for inferior tech, but you still get a really good deal on these types of rigs (6831/6860/7811) due to the price vs preformance against other laptops

I still say throwing an 1920x1200 LCD in that thing was a bad idea.... obv you can downscale, but 1440x900 is awesome, and if I need to downscale, 1024x768 is so low i Can max any game on it.

Yeah i agree. 1440x900 is just about perfect for gaming.

But the 1920x1200 is great for working.

There needs to be a way to have both and both be native...then we would have the perfect panel :p

the 7811 can still max almost all games at 1920x1200 and like you said it can be downscaled... don't get the down side to that... if on the 7811 it needs downscaled to 1024x768 it can even do that :p

The only issue I have with running things on non-native resolutions on this laptop is that I found that the text blur's much more than it has on any of my desktop displays. :(
