Hi All.
The left side of my 7811 gets very hot to the touch when gaming. I didn't get any crashes after 1-2 hours of playing Mass Effect, but I was wondering how hot is "too hot"?-- what should my temperatures be below? Also, is there a program installed somewhere that will monitor temps, or do I have to download something?
thanks,
- Frank

You might want to get a program to check temps and then compare them to others on here...
Quick question is your laptop flat surface or do you have the back end raised up a bit? Everyone seems to recomend raising the rear so it can breathe. -
It's 88 degrees here and humid....I ran 3dmark06 and the gpu showed max temp at 75c! max was 72c yesturday.
-
And try Cpuid's Hwmonitor. http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
BMW, What year is that STI? 04? -
Yes sir..bought it new in 04 and she has 14k miles! -
-
-
I looped 3DMark06 for about 2 hours and the GPU maxed at 69C too so it should be fine. My min is 38C and during normal use (right now) is 41C. The room temp is about 83F right now.
-
make sure that when you game you have the backend of the laptop propped up to allow airflow
-
yeah i just stuck two dvd cases in back there, it is also more comfortable. that temp isn't bad i think, at my moms house i was playing mass effect and when done i looked and my gpu was at 86, i think. but that is because of how hot it is in her house, usually it stays below 76.

I have not had any issues with heat, but I do keep an eye on things with a few choice programs.
1) Real Temp 2.7 for monitoring the CPU temps. This is arguably the most accurate utility available for the Core 2 series chips and this P8400 is fully recognized. I used Core Temp for a long time but after I did some research found that it was just not nearly as accurate as Real Temp.

2) EVGA Precision v1.32 for monitoring my GPU temps. This also monitors the Core/Shader/Memory clocks, shows your FPS, and current mode of DX9/10. It will not allow control over clock speeds or fan speed yet... but I am hopeful that it will in the future and if not sooner than later I am going to contact the writer (Unwinder) of this and the more popular version, Riva Tuner.

My GPU load temps while playing for example Crysis, end up in the upper 60c to mid 70c range when leaving the laptop on a flat surface like my desk etc. When propped up however, the load temps drop by up to 10c... I achieve this for now by using a nice thick hardcover textbook. However I do want to pickup a laptop cooler that will be more suitable, and comfortable to use. I have done quite a bit of research and so far this model from NZXT seems to be the best possible cooler for the Gateway FX series laptops.
I say this because of the location of the fans are at the top of the device, which is perfect for my 7811FX, and that there are three (yes, three) 120mm fans mounted to the bottom of this thing... comes in silver or black.

My alternative choice is the Zalman ZM-NC2000 series cooler (also in silver or black.) The ventilation holes are farther towards the front on this one, but it has a few things going for it that I like more than the NZXT including build quality and size mainly... plus I think it is just plain better looking and its cheaper.

Also the Zalman cooler would fit nicely inside the Wenger Patriot case I bought to carry around my 7811FX... so I could easily take it with me wherever I travel. Also the Zalman looks like it would be perfectly comfortable to use on my lap.
Anyways... just thought I'd toss in my .02 -
On a flat surface, my GPU maxed at 83. Is that too hot? The house has been a little hot in general.
-
-
ftlum, I maxed out at 82C on a flat surface but I have seen other people with lower temps than us (flat surface test). I got a laptop cooler for mine. Has anyone here cleaned and reapplied arctic silver to the GPU?

nice thread
very informative -
I suggest the following monitoring setup
run rivatuner for the onscreen in game stuff
for desktop stuff in vista run everest ultimate with the vista sidebar showing temps
then go into riva tuner and have it input CPU temp, HD temp, and anything else you want monitored from everest
I can always keep an eye on temps with this setup.
if you want a screenshot let me know! -
I would like to see a screenshot.
I noticed my left side was very hot to touch as well.. mid Call of Duty 4 (Maxed Settings) it was incredibly hot. It felt like it would burn me if I kept my hand remained there. Of course I did have the laptop on my lap.. sitting in a lay-z-boy recliner.
And to Schmoof.. how often do you run those tests to monitor your P-7811FX? -
vista sidebar
ingame
-
k it scaled like crap..one second
I can do a writeup as well. its really pretty simple -
When Vista first was launched.. there was reports that the Sidebar had a big performance drop.. Is that true or does it really not effect your performance?
-
meh this laptop is snappy so I am not too worried about it...I am sure some of the widgets could suck down resources but I have yet to have this thing lag on me
-
Interesting update: I propped up the back of the laptop just with the instruction manual and my max GPU temps went from 83 to 70! Guess I'll need to buy something like those little extendable that can be stuck on the bottom of a laptop.
Also, does the type of surface you put the laptop on makes a difference (cheap wood-desk). -
I have to say however that focusfre4k's suggestions are better...
Only thing about that is Everest Ultimate is not free... but it is well worth it.
Focusfre4k would you be so kind as to let us know how you setup Riva Tuner to monitor the CPU stats? -
I will do a complete writeup tonight at work. I will probably start a new thread though just to keep it centralized in an easy access place. all that is really going on is that everest is passing the temps to rivatuner
quick rundown of how the how to
install both app's
configure everest to watch your CPU temp and anything else you want monitored in the external applications section of preferences. make sure you check the box to enable shared memory.
then in rivatuner
go into the monitor tab of riva tuner. enable background monitoring...the red button. then click setup. then select all the things you want monitored out of the default options...most are gpu related. NEXT click on plugins. then click the everest.dll plugin. that should add more options to the list of monitors to monitor list.
once you have added all of the monitors you want monitored right click on each of their respective graphs and then go to setup and at the bottom is should have a button to enable on screen monitoring. then I think you click run server and it should throw another process into your tray.
just a bit of fiddling around to get it to work correctly. I will create a tutorial as best I can tonight while at work like I said. -
Sweet. I'll be looking forward to it. I just picked up my 7811 this morning.
I will say as my first laptop this thing is pretty sick!
-
Not sure the correct thread to post this, seemed as good as any.
My hard drive temp is currently at 65C while running a virus scan (AVG free 8.0), back end of it is propped up for some more airflow. Flat surface, ambient room temp around 72/73F.
Currently on my second 7811-fx and debating another return to best buy. -
Man thats really warm. I was getting all frazzled over 52C eariler this morning... After i seen that i have mine elevated with dvd case's
Does anyone else's hard drive continually elevate in temp? Mine just gradually goes up the more I sit here. -
-
Just remember that if you take the other cage out, there'll be 2 screws you won't be able to secure.

for all who were asking I made a guide in this sub forum
