hey guys! so i just picked up my 7811 from best buy yesterday, and when i brought it home, i noticed that with a black background, part of the screen was much lighter than the rest(i think its called ghosting?). Anyways, i was just wondering if this situation can get any worse and if it will affect me down the road. thanks!

What you are describing is backlight bleed. Will normally happen near the edges of the screen. It's pretty much just nature of the beast and I've never seen it change at all over the life of a notebook. If you think yours is excessive the exchange it for another unit but frankly pretty much all of them will do it to some degree.

FYI "ghosting" typically refers to image bleed when fast motion is shown on an LCD screen. It's the reason most LCD panels are given a response time in ms. The lower the response time (faster) the less ghosting. Most modern LCD panels exhibit very little ghosting especially when compared to some of the original consumer models. Even the worst of today's LCDs are LIGHTYEARS better then those original displays. A CRT monitor still is far superior to any LCD panel in this aspect but most would agree that LCD panels have come so far that the very few minor annoyances with them are FAR outweighed by their advantages (smaller, lighter, more crisp text etc..) over their CRT cousins.

Slight ghosting is normal for this model (the people who say it's not there are blind :p). However it should be so slight that you either should not notice it or won't at all. I noticed it once when I was looking for it and then stopped noticing it because it was so slight.
That said I have no idea how much your is ghosting and only you can tell if it's too much.

hmmm, well this isn't at the edges at all. all of it is in the middle. its almost like someone smeared white streaks very lightly around the middle of the screen to make a faint blob that's lighter than the rest of the screen. but it's only noticeable against very dark/black backrounds. is this still the "blacklight' bleeding you're talking about? thanks in advance!

You might have a problem then.

7811 is great and all but it for sure has enough bad eggs.

it should only be at the edges mine has more on the bottom. Light bleeding is normal as i had it on my sager and HP. What you describe could be a defect..any pics?

Ghosting is the response time described above thus why i have plasma for home tv.

That doesn't sound like backlight bleed at all. That sounds like you have a defective screen and should get that puppy back to best buy asap.

I have it too, the left portion of the screen(not along the edges). I can only see it when I look at the screen from the side. It's unnoticable when looking at the screen directly but would like to know if this will get worse as the lcd ages.

Mine is at the bottom too and only visible if the whole screen is black, otherwise I can't really see it.

I got mine a few days ago, and yup! ghosting. it's what it looks like around your finger when you push on the screen, but real light. gateway says you can mostly remedy it by rubbing firmly on your screen with a cleaning cloth or towel. it pretty much worked for me, but 1440? i just exchanged it a couple days later and gor a new one. have a little light that comes up from the bottom...not much. i'll deal. btw, 7811 is on sale again this week at BB, but back ordered so you should be able to get a rain check. i am going back today and getting my 200 back. no free game this time though i don't believe.

I'm quite picky, like you Quad.. These screens are very nice.. Ive seen six of em so far. 3 out of the 6 had the same issue the OP mentions. Whereas there is a small bleeding of white coming through on dark backgrounds, but it was only noticeable when you viewed the screen from an angle. All 6 have the slightest light bleed from the bottom of the screen, but it's never been half the size of the windows task bar. One had a dead pixel, which was the first Ive ever seen that. It was a lil red dot that shined bright in the middle of the screen. The screen I've got here now is beautiful. No light areas anywhere, just the slightest bleeding across the base of the screen..less than any previous. I think I got lucky and found the perfect 7811FX...even has the newer BIOS with raid - 9c.08.00 :)
