running a clean install of vista 64 ultimate....

if I restart the machine from the start menu I don't have this issue.

If I shutdown the machine and wait 1 minute, turn it on... and it will just go to a blinking cursor on the upper left hand corner of the screen.

I waited about 5 minutes and nothing, same cursor just blinking...

I have not changed anything in the bios, I have the latest drivers for everything... machine is 3 days old

Not sure but possibly after installing some Windows Updates you didn't let it go through the motions?

I did notice it started happening after a windows update. I left it with the cursor blinking for a while and it finally booted...

now to see if it happens again, brb

    This would be my suggestion:
If you are like me, even reinstalling vista again wont get it out of your mind that your machine isnt defective or messed up. So go exchange it.

If you cant exchange it, reinstall vista. It will have you the time of having to trouble shoot all of this.

    Figured it out...

I have an external usb 2 500gig drive connected to the machine... the drive shows up in the bios in the boot order... when i removed the drive from the boot list, the computer boots without a problem... seems the bios still scans the disk for boot record even though there is another bootable disk before it on the list... (c drive)

I did another clean install of vista 64 and now just figured it out  Oh well, time to reinstall my games and crap

well i hope lesson learned, always disconnect every possible thing to isolate the problem. and give a full description of your set up if you want a good answer.
