pretty sure that theory has been dismissed... get one>stress test it>take it back ASAP if you find anything wrong or enjoy the hell out of it like most others!!!

seems like u already bought one. but 2887 is the one to generally avoid if u can. just for ones satisfaction. and try to get 2888. but 2888's have other problems which are more frequent. light leakage etc.

i have a flawless 2887 but it is my second one. got my first one the first week they were available and had to take it back before the serial#'s came into question.

There are some differences between the two

    first one bad... second good...
ridged ac adapter smaller smooth ac adapter
rickity DVD drive much more solid dvd drive

the 2887 was avoided because it had an older bios, as well as some other differences. however, the bios has been released on NBR, so if you get a 2887 just upgrade the bios and you should be fine

A very very small number of 2887s had problems with overheating. It is possible that this was also an issue on other SNs, but that has not been reported here (this could just be due to the limited number of 2888s that made it into the wild). Thousands of 2887s are in the wild and running fine. The light leakage on my 2888 is no worse than it was on my 2887. But a BIOS and video driver upgrade did not keep my 2887's GPU from frying itself.

Don't worry about it. As suggested by Mormegil, stress the heck out of it and take it back if it breaks. I would recommend at least the 9C.08 BIOS and a more recent video driver than the one found on Gateways website.
