I spilled wine in my 7811 and ruined the motherboard, now I am replacing the board with a 7908, and will use all the rest of the 7811 stuff with it. My thinking is, I will get basically a 7805 with better graphics and upgradeable cpu to a quad.

7908u was a P8700 C2D. I am not sure if the board will upgrade to a C2Q. I know it is a fail with the P78xx series but the newer boards may have better luck.

Edit; now this is a Refurb P7901h, that should be true quad capable

I am not sure about the P79xx series. I know with the P78xx is supposedly used the exact same MB between the C2D and C2Q versions but gateway claimed there was a Main Board mod done. I can see those part numbers between the different P79xx mainboards are the same too between them. I just do not know if a mod is required to run a C2Q like the P7901H had originally.

Computer is now back up and running, as I am posting from the new computer. Is there a way to look up the main board info, from within windows 7?

If any of you have a 7811-7805 that has died, I highly recommend this seller and mobo.

Yes, that's what I did, a 7901, still running the p8400 processor from the 7811. Everything hooks right up and runs like new.

My understanding is that the 7901 is supposed to. And I have 1920x1200 from the 7811. The ONLY part so far that I have changed, is the main board.

Ubuntu 10.10 I have tried a few versions of Linux, and most have been disappointing. Tried Ubuntu 10.9 on this 7811, and it was glitchy would not support sound or wireless. But this version was plug and play, boot up, load video driver, and bean glitch free ever since. Very crisp clean smooth feel to the experience. And did I mention firefox is at least twice as fast under this OS?
