    Hey Crew,

I bought a P 7801u a few months ago. Looking at this thread for the 7811FX, I have a few questions.

    1) Will the .12 bios work for the 7801?

    2) Is it actually possible to upgrade the processor? Is it not integrated into the board? I haven't had a newer laptop for a while. Last time I opened one up, everything was all one piece.

    3) I heard on another forum that the 7801 had a second PCIe slot. Is it possible to throw another Video card in it for SLI link? Does the board support it?

    Cheers,
    Thanks crew

There isn't a second PCIe slot. There's a second and vacant *mini-PCIe* slot, which isn't good for a tremendous amount of things other than Intel's "Turbo Memory" Robson module.

The CPU can be upgraded, yes. Theoretically to a quad core, but not in practice due to variations in the heatpipe design. As for the BIOS, so long as it's a Centrino 2 P-7xxx Gateway laptop, the BIOS should work. 9c.17.00 is the most recent one, not 9c.12.

Think of it as trying to stick a PCIe x16 card into a x1 slot.

Sweet. Thanks, crew. What about the processor and Bios updates?

Yes and yes. The latest BOIS is actually 9c.17.00, the highest CPUs you can upgrade to are the T9900 and X9100, both are about 3.00Ghz. The only difference between the two is that the X9100 has unlocked multipliers which can be useful for overclocking, but you can't OC the P78xx and the T9900 is a newer chip with newer stepping, thus runs cooler.

Lots of threats about upgrading the CPU here, the most popular choices are P9600 (2.66Ghz), P9700 (2.8Ghz), T9800 (2.93Ghz) and T9900 (3.06Ghz). The P series requires less power and runs cooler, but the T series is cost effective for the power it delivers.

Thanks Ranger! That is useful news. Do you know where I can find the .17 BIOS update? I checked for it on Gateway. It doesn't seem to be there.

    One more thing,

Any recommendations on where to buy processors from?

I just bought a T9900 from HP Parts Store for $340 (tax in some states), that is a pretty tight deal.

Besides eBay, I'd recommend ExcaliburPC and XPCGear. Someone mentioned HP's Spare Parts Department has semi-decent deals, too.

Is there supposed to be new features available in the BIOS setup with the .17 BIOS. Is there a function key that makes those appear?

The changes in the .17 BIOS are transparent and only "noticeable" (or unnoticeable). It's a typical OEM BIOS - devoid of any settings that could let us "break" our computers.
