I have had numerous issues with trying to install a clean build with 64bit Vista Ultimate. All of the issues seem to be with the drivers. After a clean install I try to use the Gateway driver backup disk to install the drivers but constantly get blue screen after blue screen when installing the nvidia or audio drivers (the ones on the gateway disk).

This has happened multiple times this weekend. Anyone try a clean install with no issues?

For me I did a clean install but googled my only drivers. I found that the only nvidia drivers that work are the 174.93 from www.laptopvideo2go. The wifi you can find at www.intel.com, it's the 5100 series drivers.

I ran a clean install and had absolutely no problems installing the drivers from the disc I generated after purchasing the laptop.

Picked up a 7811FX this past weekend and spent hours trying to get Vista Ultimate working. I've used the drivers from the generated disk and everything is fine up until I install the video driver. I used latest video driver from laptopvideo2go and the one on the Gateway generated disk but get a BSOD every time in Ultimate.

Is there an order to installing the drivers?

I restored back to the default Vista Home Premium and it works fine. I even upgraded the video driver while in Vista Home and it is fine.

Seems that something is missing or in conflict whenever I do the Vista Ultimate install. I'm going to try it a couple more times tonight but this is getting frustrating...

They should be since the version of Vista Home that came preinstalled is x64.

I would think 64 is all the same. Try not installing the Intel chipset drivers. Someone (sorry too late to look up who) said they may be a problem. I'm curious to have someone else try not installing them. Mine works so not going to fool with it.

Maybe when my second drive arrives, I'll give it a shot with Ultimate.

I think this would be good practice for the "clean install" crowd. Use a second drive and save the original until you are up and running. Most will want a second drive anyway. No reason to burn the bridge. You want to give it a workout for the 14 day return period and if you spend the entire time installing the OS ... well just a thought.

Installed back to default Vista Home last night then did an upgrade to Vista Business and it worked fine. Then I tried to put Vista Ultimate on after Business. The install went fine but after reinstalling the video driver, BSOD again...

I'm thinking there is something wrong with the Ultimate DVD I have (it is from TechNet).

I'm going to get a new copy of Ultimate from TechNet but their downloads site has been down for the last couple days. I'm getting impatiant so I think I'll just go with Business for now than try an upgrade later.

Are you installing your drivers in the correct order?

    Intel Chipset
    Intel AHCI
    Nvidia Graphics
    Conexant Sound
    Synaptics Touchpad
    Intel Wireless 5100
...and then the other drivers in no particular order

The first time I tried installing Ultimate, I did it like you show with chipset coming first, etc. All worked fine until rebooting after the video driver. I also tried it with just the video driver after a fresh install of Ultimate and still got the BSOD.

Installing using the default Home edition and Vista Business that I have worked fine so I'm leaning toward something on my Ultimate disk is corrupt and not installing properly. I have a TechNet membership so was going to download a fresh Ultimate disk. That's what I'm working on now.

Are you using Comcast internet? I've noticed a pair of MSDN downloads have problems due to Comcast apparently manipulating the connection in some way because they were big 4 GB downloads. I don't have any other explanation other than blaming Comcast. Downloading those files in the early morning worked just fine.

It just seems rather unusual multiple people are having Ultimate problems. I thought all Vista versions were on all Vista discs...
