I woke up this morning and found that the LED on my power adaptor was out and my 7811fx was not showing as being plugged in. After trying out some different outlets and playing around with the power cord I noticed that when the AC adaptor was not plugged into the laptop the AC adaptor is getting power: the LED lights up; however, the INSTANT I plug it into the laptop, the LED turns off and I have no power to the laptop.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what can be done to correct this problem?

Check both ends (The plug and where it plugs into) to make sure the contacts are clean and there's nothing inside thats somehow causing a short. Sounds like a bad charger though. Only way to be sure BEFORE buying a new one is to try a different charger (One that is known to work on the P78** series) and make sure it works with your laptop.

Maybe if you take it in somewhere they'll let you try the new charger before buying it? It will obviously depend on the store though since they don't have to do that.

I purchased a replacement adaptor (the Targus 180w), and the EXACT same thing happens... this, sadly, is not looking like an adaptor issue. It looks like I'll have to go inside and make sure that everything is still connected properly on the power side. I take this laptop everywhere with me and it may have been jarred loose; however, this theory may not hold a lot of water, as the issue occured after several days of standing still in a hotel.

After taking the system apart, my heart has sunk. I've narrowed the problem down to the motherboard. When I remove the daughter board where the power is plugged into, then plug the power brick on the LED remains lit on the power brick. When I plug the daughter board back in and plug the ac adaptor back in the LED goes out. This shows that there is a short of some sort on the motherboard itself. A replacement is going to be in order, which I have a feeling will run me near as much as a new system.

I had the EXACT same problem with my PSU when it was new, it was not the computer. It WAS the power brick in that under load it cuts out. Sorry to hear you have such issues though........

Thanks for the reply; however, the problem is not happening under load. The laptop is off. When the daughter board is plugged into the motherboard and there is no power in the system the LED on the brick still goes out. This problem also persists with my replacement Targus 180w adaptor (i.e. the LED light also goes out on it). The point at which the problem persists is when the Mobo is introduced into the equation (again, still no power, no load).
