I just bought the 7815u Gateway FX laptop

    7350 Core 2 duo and 9800m GTS

I have heard of people doing a swap to an x9100 - will this be worth it?

Also, can I put in a better GPU than the 9800m GTS? If so, is it worth it?

I already ordered ICD7 to reapply on all areas and I've heard the x9100 makes a big difference.

I just got Fallout New Vegas, and the laptop as is will play it (1440x900) res on low to medium settings, but there are some areas where frames drop REALLY low. Maybe the x9100 will help with that? Maybe a better GPU to make this thing work better with some other new games? I got the laptop for free basically, so any upgrades I will willingly pay for. Thanks!!

Upgrading the CPU to x9100 is the best you can do, unless you sell that laptop and pay more for a better gaming laptop/desktop.

I've never seen anyone upgrading their laptop's GPU. I believe it's possible but pointless due to the costs and work required for it.

You're better off to buy a better laptop with a better GPU.

Well I have had two Dell XPS laptops - and have upgraded the 7800gtx to 7950gtx and can't remember the last one but I was able to upgrade. So I guess what I was asking is does it come out as easily as the dell did with the 7800 series gpu. Can I put in a 9800 GTX instead of a GTS?

And would the x9100 run cooler? Would it take away a big bottleneck? Any benchmark or FPS stats you can point me to? Thanks!

The other laptop that I upgraded was one of the first dell xps with the 6800 gpu, upgraded to a 6800 ULTRA. So it can be done

It can be done on other laptops but the gateway FXs have the GPU soldered into the motherboard.

The CPU upgrade can be done.

FX design if Fuc*ed up in case of GPU. can't be done you can't change the GPU. It is soldered in the MOBO

Even to reach the GPU you have to Disassemble the whole Laptop. And believe me virtually you have to.

Some guys just bcoz their GPU fan failed have discarded their laptop and sold them piece by piece(Even changing the fan is f#$king problem ), And the bigger problem is to make that thing start again.

you can opt upto X9300 wwith 1066fsb board no doubt of Extreme Power.

By the way here is someone who gone X9100:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/gateway-emachines/505982-x9100-results-7815u.html

Better go for x9300/x9100 and overclock 9800 for optium gaming experience.

or sell that thing and go for Better gaming Laptop

I dont think the X9300 will work because it is a quad core QX9300 unlike the dual core X9100.

So unsolder it, and solder on a new one.

I`m afraid x9100 is the limit for this series.

Ain't gonna happen, to many variables, power, BIOS, pinout, etc......

About the best that can be done with the 78 series is

    T9900 or X9100 cpu's
    8gb Ram
    Bluray drive/burner
    SSD's
    1920 x 1200 LCD if yours came with 1440 x 900
    OC'ing the GPU

There is MXM-III ATI HD 4870 DDR3 1G MXM 3.0 TYPE B sale on this chinese site
The price is approximately $280 US dollars.

    or

MXM HE Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M which is equivalent of Nvidia 280M.
Priced at approximately $370 US dollars

It is theoretically possible to upgrade the GPU on Gateway if it's MXM 3.0 Type B or MXM HE compatible.
