I have finally figured out how to replace the V BIOS on the Phoenix BIOS. I have aquired an editor and you can import a V BIOS to replace the Nvidia that resides there. I need some help though. anyone know where to come across an 8800m GTX BIOS? i google searched and couldnt find one, I will forum search in a sec. This might brick my system. I dont think it will though.

I dont think the stream processors are something that could be physcially cut(i dont know they could be though?) and the only difference between the 8800m GTS and the 8800m GTX is the number of stream processors. so this COULD unlock them for us.

You can try posting in the laptopvideo2go forums. They might have the bios you are looking for.

edit: also couldn't we try a 9800m gt bios?

Not getting my hopes too far up...but man this would be the sweetest thing to ever happen in the realms of notebooks.

Could you imagine getting GTX performance out of laptops we all paid less than 1500 dollars for (before upgrades)

and as johnksss said... it would be a huge feather in the hat of the nbr.

If we are able to "unlock" the extra pipes for the 8800, we can do it for the 9800 also!......Supposing the 9800 pipes were "cut" also.

if we can do this on our notebooks we will be able to do this also at desktop cards that uses G92 GPU or we can try to unlock all pimp lines and make it a 8800 gt :p

    Pimp lines FTW!

I'll be watching this thread, although I'm pretty sure it's impossible. I'm not even sure if there is a laptop with a 8800m GTX that isn't an MXM type video card. In fact, the only laptops I know of that have a GTS is this one and that 20" HP one.

But hey, if it works... you know I'll be doing it  I will probably need to finally buy some type of notebook cooling station if it works, hehe.

    you know thats very confusing.

But mxm is just an nvidia designed removable gpu set up for laptops.

The fact that there is a vbios in the bios, not in the card? It shows it is not MXM.

The vbios has to be on the card to be mxm. This is the type of bios that is in a dell, where you will have to find a bios of a machine that uses the gtx.

( ie the inspiron 9400 and the xps something)

There is no such machine. Taking the bios from a alienware wont do anything they have different hardware

cant take the bios from any other machine actually Ive thought about it there is no other machine with vbios that uses the 8800 gts. and the 7811 fx will have a different bios because of the new cpu

Oh well, unlocking the blocked pipes don't make us a thief, we already paid for the component anyways. We're just merely licking our way to the center of the tootsie pop........whatever the heck I'm saying.

yeah but licking your way to the center takes a while. if i recall correctly, it took me about 323 licks before i hit the tootsie part.i was in a car for about 14 hours on a trip with nothing to do.

but it would be nice if this worked, but i'd wait for a couple of people to try it out if it does.

wow, so i see dawgdoc finally got banned. and here i was just going to reply to some more of his nonsense, but no need now. :)

and on a nother note...after further looking and asking around. there is still no way to invoke the bios recovery option on any of the new gateway laptops. so with this in mind...i would let that go if i we're you. if you corrunpt the vbios, then the whole laptop has to be reflashed to get the vbios set back to normal. and if the system wont auto boot a usb floppy or cd then you will need to use the recovery method. and since we don't have that. you WILL be sending it in. that's kind of why i have been looking around the net for this answer every day. and calling every day, still no luck.

yes, but no one had the right vbios at the time....

i tried that trick on a hp dv9700 and it didn't work. tried to change a 8600m gs in to a 8600m gt..... did not work and bios was crashed. so i did the crisis recovery and brought the bios back to normal.

i think my box comes tomorrow, so this is my last day of searching and trying combos to get it into crysis recovery mode.

some one said you can add the crysis recovery mode option to the bios so that your laptop will do it....but that has yet to be proven. and i have been through a big part of the bios file looking for this said option. no luck on that theory either.

All he ever posts is flyby nonsense. He(mis)reads the thread title, flys in and drops a bomb without ever reading a single post.

And nars, thanks for the effort man. Hopefully a non-mxm BIOS will turn up, but if not no worries. :)

If they were all running the same resolution I'd agree. At different resolutions I'm not so sure the above is true.

Unfortunately, anytime a new model comes out, people are going to post tons of threads about it. I'm assuming it's the same or similar in other forums.

ah, now i see what he meant with that (8800m GTS < 9800m GTS < 8800m GTX < 9800m GT) he is going in order of speed starting with the 8800m gts to the higher card 9800m gt. makes sense now. thanks wtburnette.

although it has no barring on converting a 8800m gts to a 8800m gtx card though. guess that's why i didn't understand where he was going with it. lol
