Not sure if this has been confirmed but i saw this and i thought that the Santa Rosa Ram limit was 4GB
check it out here
Or does this apply to the Montevina platform
-
with a 64bit OS, this RAM will work just fine.
-
I've seen that, and it's a very tempting price for 8 gigs of Ram.
Intel and programs you download will say 4 gigs is the max... hard to say if 8 gigs will work as I don't know too many trustworthy people who have tried it yet....
Edit: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=254076
In that link someone mentions that Santa Rosa is only able to address 8 gigs max of memory... so that means you can have 8 gigs of ram but only see 6-7 because of the video card ram, plus other things... not confirmed, but something to think about. -
It is not known for sure whether or not it will work with all 8GB. The chipset has, to my knowledge, not been tested with 8GB of ram... really only one way to find out.
-
Here's some more info... some say yes, some say no.
Will 8gb RAM work on Santa Rosa? Answer inside:
8gb in Dell Latitude D830
My Lenovo ThinkPad T61p now has 8GB of RAM
It's hard to say, as I don't think anyone has tried in a Gateway yet.
Edit: More reading seems to show that it should work.... should, not will. -
8GB for $300 is tempting when you can buy 4GB for $50?
Hardly. -
-
(or was it the 1.67ghz one ?)
hardly and hardly again for that 300$ -
I meant compared to a non-extreme cpu for around $250-300, but that's my fault for not explaining myself...
-
I paid $350 for my X9000 so it was well worth the upgrade.
4GB is more than enough for 99.9% of tasks anyway - why would you want 8GB? -
If you don't need it then you don't need it, simple as that...
-
Same reason some buy a x9000 when they don't need it, to be in the cool kids club.
Now that I think of it, is this ram for sale yet at Best Buy? If so I will be the guinea pig and if it works I guess I get to join the club. -
-
The X9000 gave me a huge boost in application and game performance.
It's got sod all to do with a 'cool kids club'.
What would an extra 4GB of RAM do - pretty much nothing. -
-
Ok so tell me what programs YOU use that would utilise 8GB of RAM.
-
That one program you know the one.
-
I have 3 gigs of RAM right now, the stock on the 6831FX. I could use more than that if I have all my Adobe CS4 programs open, which includes multiple files in Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, and 2 or 3 Bridge programs open, and also including multiple Firefox programs open with multiple tabs open, I could VERY easily saturate 3 gigs, and most likely 4 gigs as well.
That's just me, don't forget about people who use VMware, or larger 3d or architect type programs. Like I said earlier, if you don't need it, then why does it matter? Most people don't need an X9000, but do they come into your threads and ask you why you need it? Not usually... People can use more than 4 gigs of RAM, plain and simple. If you can't, then good for you, you get to save $300 -
Originally I stated that $300 was 'not tempting' when 4GB is $50.
I then asked a simple question - why would you need 8GB.
No need to get so defensive, just answer the question.
Good luck with your $300 upgrade. -
And, the Santa Rosa Chipset maxes out @ 8 GB. However, your OS also has to support it, otherwise it's a waste. And IMHO, 4GB is plenty, unless you're running a server that needs to access lots of info quickly and often. But, for a normal users' home system..it's a waste of money and just bragging rights. -

I want 8GB of RAM. I cant use it...but man it would be nice to have 6gigs worth of crap stored up so i NEVER have to access my HD. I could have an entire movie stored up in RAM and never touch the HD watching the entire thing
I now know my next month purchase -
i hate how microsoft limited the ram capability of 64 bit vista...
last i checked home basic x64 supported 8gb, home premium 16gb, all other version 128gb + -
Here ya go.. The answer to Vista RAM.

16gb of ram.... [drool] -
So would 8 gig "possibly" work in the 6860 too?
-
-
What would you be doing to even require 8GB? I think a lot of people have misconceptions in regards to what RAM actually does.

Except that things like Norton 360 and even some of MS own security features check registry values and certain files and executables on disk on a regular and frequent basis, so your hard drive doesn't get much rest.
-
so will this work on the M-152XL? If it does i'll hold off purchasing a 2gb stick and buy 2 4gb sticks when windows 7 64 bit comes out

It really is unfortunate that the 68XX series cant use 8gb of ram (as far as i know) I would really like to be ab le to dump that much of my working material into the nice fast RAM instead of ever having to wait for the HD to do anything.
Actually better than more RAM i would like a nice fully functional Trubo memory where i can control what programs and apps get to be stored and ignore the rest... that'd be sweet -

disable superfetch..or windows indexing..or both.
-
There are a few services which will access the disk regularly - event logging is another one.
8GB Ram?? Will it work with the 6831FX Santa Rosa Chipset??
