My laptop has been getting really hot all of a sudden, I think it was because I was running WoW on a maximized screen with no cooler. I just want to know if this is really bad for my laptop.
Anything I could do instead of undervolting my laptop?
If you suggest a cooler go here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5596295#post5596295
Here's picture of my temperatures

Yeah thats pretty excessive temps.
Have you cleaned it recently?
Do you raise the back when gaming?
Also was that a short term spike or constant? You might want to log your temps to find out. If it just spiked for a minute at 89 due to something in game, but normally ran at 60-70 then its not that big of a deal, but if it was constantly at 89degrees then you have a cooling issue -
I haven't cleaned it ever since I got it -_-
And it ranges from 80 - 90 degrees.
Got a guide on how to clean it, I'm pretty bad when comes to the insides of a laptop.
I don't raise a back, when I'm gaming. -
Those temps look fine to me...
I have stressed test 3 different 78xx with 30min of Furmarks maxed out. The peak temperature was 96C across all 3 units. -
But did it stay in the ranges I have, and this is ONLY on WoW. I don't really think WoW isn't really a graphic intensive game.
-
As I stated, I have used Furmark for 30mins maxed out and all three units peaked at ~96C. So an obvious next step is for you to run Furmark for 30mins maxed out and see what the peak limit of your unit.
-
Hmmm...What did you put for the options. I know you said maxed out but, what would be maxed out for you?
-
Stability Test
Resolution - Fullscreen 1920x1200
MSAA Samples - 16x
Make sure you have Hardware Monitor running at the same time. -
I closed it 2 minutes into the test.
My GPU temps spiked from 57 to 99 Degrees and rose to over 104 degrees and was still rising.
There has to be something wrong now. -
You might want to look into external cooling. -
Any suggested cooling products available in Canada?
It has to be cheap, but good quality.' -
Cheap and good quality really don't mix well
You can try propping your laptop and see if that improves temperatures.
I am not the best guy to ask for cooler recommendation, as I haven't bothered with one. IIRC, the Zalman ZM-NC2000 was considered to be the best cooler for the 78xx. -
I heard but it's $105, that's quite a lot of money I really don't want to spend. I was thinking of getting an external and another CPU this Christmas so I need some money leftover

I know its not all that big for 78xx series but thought i'd give a try for that price. Also i dont game a lot. Will let you know once i use it. -
Ok I really suggest cleaning your laptop.
All you have to do is to take the back cover off to expose the cpu, ram, etc.
Then spray compressed air into the laptop, cpu fan, and gpu fan. You don't have to take off the whole back cover.
I didn't clean it since I bought it (about 9 months) since I was so skeptical it would make a difference.
But when I did, wow I was impressed by the drops in temps.
I went from like 90 Celsius gaming to 60 max on gpu temps.
My cpu fan would turn on like crazy when watching HD videos on youtube, and now it rarely spins up.
Just my two cents. Plus its cheaper than the cooler. -
His GPU has high temps, so all you gotta do is spray some compressed air into the fan exhaust. Maybe get a nice cooler when you have the cash. Until then, prop is up and clean it regularly.
-
Thanks, for the info, about opening up the back of the laptop, would too much compressed air damage some of the components inside the laptop?
-
all the gaming ive done with this and my temps have never hit 90*c and i have played crysis on the highest settings that the 05u can handle. about once a month, maybe twice ill take some compressed air and shoot the vents a little. And I normally have the back raised, but thats it.
-
what about some tp, mine started acting up, opened it up, easy peasy btw, and then used compressed air on the vents and heatsinks and took the thermal pads off and stuck on some artic silver 5, not it runs about 35 - 40 idle, 68 max
also i dont prop when playing games and i dont have a cooler, i play quite a bit on it -
Yeah, I'm going to go get some compressed air soon and open my laptop up to see what the damage is. I might also think into buying a good cooler.

A review of the Zalman cooler:
Pros: It's fits my Gateway FX laptop perfectly! 2 USB ports, 1 on each side is a real plus! Very quiet, and very effective. My laptop runs so much cooler now!
It's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for!
Cons: I had to flip the cooler since the exhaust fans for the lap top is towards the back of the screen, but it's no biggie. -
I'd open her up and look. If you see a bunch of dirt caked or hair or something else you know what the blockage is. If you don't see anything that would point to issues with the machine. Cleaning is essential regardless but I've had mine since early March without it going over 56C on the GPU. I'm against overclocking for gaming. Sure I could push my machine hard but why would I. It runs terrific the way it is.

i sucked everything out. -
Okay I got a can of compressed air now should I open or should I just spray it in?

I always use compressed air lines rather than the cans. The cans do not have nearly as much pressure and occasionally "spit" and may temporarily freeze the components you are spraying.
As far as the fan bearings, stick a thin piece of plastic (Not something that will break when you're doing this, not something metal that may cause a short if something goes wrong) in the vents to hold the fan in place. THEN spray. Spray through the intake and then also spray through the exhaust and maybe even back again just to make sure everything is out and the heatsink vents are clean.
You should get in the habit of doing this every couple months, maybe more if you live in a house with animals (due to excessive hair/dust getting in vents). -
Should I use a ear bud or something to hold the fan in place?
-

Something that will fit through the small slits in the vents and hold the fans in place without breaking or falling through will be fine.
-
Yeah I found something and I tested the temps. They went down 40 Degrees
( 90 Degrees - 55 Degrees and stable)
There was a TON of dust in the top right fan, it was COVERED and I mean covered in dust!!! -
figured dust was the issue, with a cpu under 2.3ghz you should be around 60-65c in the average demanding game
-
i'm thinking of cleaning out the laptop too as i'm getting slightly elevated temps and can see a thin coat of dust over both the vents. however, i was at the local comp. shop where i get most of my stuff done, and the tech guy said blowing compressed air might mess things up as one will probably blow dust into the laptop itself.
he suggested opening it up but from the info i've gathered on these forums, it seems just to get near the GPU, requires taking apart almost every piece of this notebook. if u want a thorough cleaning that is.
90 Degrees Celsius Dangerous?
