    9800gts problem? crashes in games,black screen with ingame sound

    hi
    my computer is p 7805u with 9800gts and 1440x 900 display.
    unis is refurbished from tigerdirect and my problem is next:
    games resident evil 5 and street fighter 4 crash every 5-10 min , screen just goes black with background sound from game. when i press esc i got just mouse cursor and thats it.next step is ctrl+alt+del
    i tried every driver possible, wasnt overclocking,tried to change 3d settings,vsync...everything and still happens.
    is there any good solution for this? my windows is 7 , 7600 with newest drivers.
    i even tried to force max performance throught riva tuner and my 3d mark score and overall performance was way lower coz clocks on sliders are lower as well.
    i tried powermizer switch off and was same.

    please help me.

    i've experienced the same problem although it is very infrequent and only happens in GoW (played on max settings @ 1900x1200). I am OCing my gfx card and it does cause it to crash to desktop (black screen et al.) sometimes. Having said that, it simply resets the clocks and i can resume play albeit at the default clock speeds of the 9800m gts. a small notification pops up in the system tray saying the display driver stopped responding and was reset.

    i used to use official 185.85 drivers but now moved to 186.61....seems to reduce the frequency of crashes when 9800m is OCed.

    If you google for "black screen sound" you'll find a lot of people have been hit by this in different games. I've had the same problem in games made by Turbine - it's pretty commonly reported on the LOTRO forums and is most likely something to do with textures, as turning them way down solved the problem for most of us. The consensus is that Nvidia drivers are the cause, but nobody knows exactly why.

    My machine (non-OC'd 6860 with T9300) plays other games just fine at the highest settings, and the same goes for the other ppl reporting this problem, so it's limited to only certain games, and in fact only showed up after Turbine updated LOTRO to their latest expansion (and presumably rolled the engine changes through to DDO). So there may be some tools out there that are used by more than one developer and are causing this problem :(
