What are some of the advantages of the 260m gtx over the 9800m gts?

Is it at all possible to flash the 9800m to the 260?

    Would it be beneficial? Why?

the 260 GTX has 60% more shaders(if im not mistaken) it is going to be better on higher resolutions

in res like 720p i dont think there is a lot of difference(i might be wrong :D)

GTX 260M = Almost 50% performance increase compared to 9800m GTS. It has 2 times more gigaflops and processing cores than 9800mGTS

Doesn't yield very many points score wise over the 9800M GTS in 3DMark. Perhaps real world performance is better.

I am more than happy with my 9800M GTS. It plays Aion beautifully.

looking at the averages they list as 9800m as 9585 and the 260m as 10227 in 3DMark06 there is about 640 points difference. A 6.5% or so increase, not too shabby.

My main interest would be the best scores, 9800m as 9700 and 260m as 10684. This is a diffence of 984 or 10.1%. Now that is no too shabby but I should state my P-7805u with a p9600 here overclocked to 700,900,1800 yeilds 10390 in 3DMark06 at 1280x1024. At 10280x800 I can do 11,050 points too...............

There is only one situation where I find the 260 being useless. If you are trying to upgrade from a 9800M GTS to the 260 on a screen of 1440x900 you are going to pull very little performance for the cost of upgrading.

Im sorry, I didnt mean upgrading the GPU specifically. I meant upgrading to a notebook with one. I would advise all FX owners to wait for the next gen of GPU's before upgrading.

I dont know what more would need to be upgraded... I have no problem playing all games on high with anti-alias on. Ive barely maxed the processor maybe 5-10 times and that was because i was playing Luna online, WC3, and Ether Saga online all at once lol.

I dont know if it's Gears of Wars or the p7805u itself, but the game stutters (at high/max settings @ 1440x900) and crashes a lot.....

This is honestly the one thing that has me wondering if I should have gone with something other than the 7805u. I really want that 260m :)

If you go with an Asus, you will face higher temps because of the 1 fan design. If you spend the money to make the 260 useful and get a higher resolution screen you will be looking at $1800.00. Otherwise the 260 is going to be a pinch better than your gateway. If you go with the alienware/sager you will pay alot more. Really the only reason to get a comparable priced NB with a 260 in it is if you dont already have a 9800.

No its not the FX, I can play on those setting fine. You might have something hogging your resources or have a bad install.

Nah, what you are waiting for is the GTX 300 series which will actually incorporate a new design. It should prove to be a considerable upgrade over the 9800 and fake 200 series for NB's. I say fake because the 200 series is just an 8800 core with 2 generations of upgrades. Its like taking an old car and just adding stuff to it that makes it better, but its still the same old car.

Is the 260 GTX a smaller fab process?

I think it depends on when your 9800 GTS was made. It appears they switched the process from 65nm to 55nm at some time during development. Here is a decent mobile GPU comparison site:
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Comparing the specs between the 9800M GTS and 260M GTX, I would say (assuming the same die size) that they are pretty close to running at the same temp.
