There is a rare occasion where 1 Gig is better than 512 Megs, but it is rare and mainly just on newer games. The 512 hwever may prove more overclockable.....

As said above, the instances where 1Gb of RAM will be needed as opposed to 512mb on a same GPU are few.

Past 512mb, the main advantage to getting more VRAM is
    - higher resolution
    - lots of physics/textures to render(and I mean lots)

Mind you, in the case of the 9800M GTS, there are other factors which will limit the performance of your game if you decide to increase their things before VRAM will.

Both these things scale depending on the game mind you. For example, IMO the main games which would really benefit from 1Gb would be Crysis, GTA4 and Mirror's Edge. Most other games can be jacked up nearly all the way with 512mb.

Not so much FPS, you are able to load, and hold, larger more complex textures without having them reload from ram. So 1 gig is bettre for modern games where extreemly high settings are used and large aa settings etc.

    actually i have been wondering...
why do people say that the 512 is better for over clocking...?
i have seen people post that on these forums...but wouldn't 1024 be better overall? (even if its said that its no real difference...)

    o.o

It's great for marketing, for sure--

I think the better question would be, is the gts faster than the gt?

    The short of it;

1.) 1024 is only advantagous where 512 becomes a limitation! Since this is rarely, if ever, a factor you will see no real advantage.

2.) Less circuitry on the chip at the same overclock means less heat, this generally means a slightl higher overclock is achievable before memory chip failure.

yes the explinations here are WAY short but they get to the jist.....

I own both games and I can say for certain that GTA IV uses 848/1024 of my dedicated video memory on high texture, high reflections, high water, highest filtering, disabled shadows. So yes, the game would be severely limited if I had 512mb on my card. I would have to lower the detail of the game. I run @ 1920 x1200 Oced Gpu at 35 fps

    I think 512 or 1024 doesn't make any difference..
I had 512 and my friend have 1024 and I did not saw any difference except mine blew his computer away because I had T9600 and he had stock..

Actually, it makes a difference when playing GTA 4. GTA 4's settings display how much video ram it will use. Playing 1920x1200 with everything on max takes around ~900mb in vram.

how well does it on the 1 gig with those settings?

I just got a 7811, and gta 4 was one of the main games i wanted to play. I'm not very happy with the performance so far =(

I've patched, but not to the latest. Lets just say I have the razor patch. It sucks though, with 512, I can't even go above medium textures.

Not really a no brainer, if you look at performance and NVs own claims, the GT is actually faster then the GTS (mobile platform) and the GS is just a downclocked GTS, really kinda sad. As for GTAIV from what I've seen the 1024 you may be able to set the settings higher, but it won't preform any better and plays at the same setting as the 512 version at its best. One of the big things was when these 1024 cards were first showing up was the fact that the cards they were on could even use the full video memory.

I can play GTA IV at 1920x1200 with everything on very high. Very smooth to say the least.

Are you using a stock driver or updated driver?
    Driver does make a difference..
Also, I would recommend on a cpu upgrade. ie..T9800
    :)

My point exactly. I mean, even when I knew that the GT is faster, the brain registers the GTS as faster. I guess they wouldnt sell as much if it was called GS 1GB.

    Yeah actually it is a no brainer... 9800m gt=8800m gtx>>>>>>than 9800m gts...

Yes the 9800m GS is quite powerfull, but in comparison is the weakest of the big boys, unless you consider a 9700m gts a big boy b/c it has 256bit interface... then 9800m gs>9700m gts
