So I went ahead and bought a refrubished one last night with the 1920x1200 screen. So hopefully I like it. I got it around 900 bucks.
I was orginally going to get the Dell XPS studio 16 mainly because of the RGB LED screen. but the refurbished one I was looking at with Bluray 2.66cpu was around 1500 bucks.
I just need a laptop this summer for my internship so i will be using 3dsmax, Maya, photoshop, after effects, so hopefully this runs them good enough. Plus I wanted a machine to play a couple games at night while I am out there.
I have a couple questions
1. Think I made the better choice over the Dell?
2. Anyone every buy a extended warrenty through something like SquareTrade/
3.How easy and how much does it cost to upgrade the CPU? I seen a few people here upgrade there CPU to 2.66ghz
4. What kind of RAM do I need? and how much does it cost?
5. Do these laptops have alot of issues? or most of you had good experiences with the laptop?
Hopefully I love this laptop, from playing around with it at Best Buy, they had a 1920 1200 one on display, it looked nice and I liked the keyboard. Thats one reason why I didnt go for the Dell it didnt have a Num keypad, I like a full keyboard.

Well I got my laptop today, a Gateway refirbished P-7805u from EBAY and so far I love it. Looks brand new. now scuffs, or anything, I got the 1920 by 1200 screen and I really love it, images look amazing. Great color. Not much glare either. typing this up on my kitchen counter and theres a large slidding door and the suns coming in and I only see a glar on Black screens.
I do notice that the area under my right wrist is pretty warm. not hot but but WARM. left wrist is very cool. I need to get a cooling pad. Any suggestions?
I just wish Gateway would include backup discs. other then that and the right side being alittle warm, I love it. I havent played any games or anything on it yet. but I like it so far. I like the keyboard as well. Paid less then 1,000 bucks for it hopefully I dont get any issues with it -
Hey maingon -
The Gateway 7800 series manuals are h e r e.
The Reference Guide (pg. 88) explains how to create the restore disks.
Enjoy. -
If you are really thinking about getting the 7805u, you better get it really soon because Best Buy is the ONLY store now that houses any FX line right now, online (besides Ebay) and local...
New laptop line is most likely about to drop soon... -
Thanks JohnWhotwo, Making backups right now.
this laptop seems really nice so far -
Cool.
Love it when a plan comes together.

went back to my main desktop where the 2 screens resolutions are 1680x1050 and it feels huge and not as crisp.
The only small issues I noted on my laptop so far is a slight humming that the hard drive seems to make, it makes a sound that goes up and down, queter and louder, though this is very quite you can hear the hum slightly
Played Half Life 2 Episode 2, looks great, During the black loading screen I noticed some light bleed. The only other thing, is whites on the left side of the screen has a slight blue, greenish tint to it, while the whites on the right side are bright white.
Anyone elses screens like that? Its kind of noticable here on the forums or on yahoo when you have the browser maximized. Which sucks.
Other then that it laptop is pretty nice, Is this something that Gateways warrenty fixes? -
Congrats on the purchase and join the club!

The lightbleed on mine is very minor. which I am glad.
As for the white, its not huge, its only noticable because I was looking for screen imperfections. I am pretty picky. I may look into my warrenty. but I will take some pictures of it later. Its not huge, just not as bright as the right side, so it seems to give a blueish tint. -
