    Hi all,

My 6831fx powerbutton doesnt respond anymore. I have a feeling that the FCC cable is broken.

The writings on the cable say:
    TennRich-K AWM 20624 80C VW-1
Ive already emailed Tennrich (tennrich.com) but no reply yet.

Hopefully one of the pioneers who took this notebook apart and also confronted this problem can help me where to buy this cable.

Or maybe the small printplate attached behind the powerbutton is fried?

I already tried Gateway Technical Support, but they can only suggest to send it in, which Ill avoid at all costs due to custom duties.

I just bought a Newhaven NHD-02161Z-FSY-YBW LCD character display for $7 at mouser.com (search for that part number and it's the only hit), and it about 3" of such a cable attached. Writing:

    Code:
    AWM 20624 80C 60V VW-1 E229188
One end is stripped, soldered to the display, and hot-glued over; the other end has one face stripped for further connection.

This probably doesn't help you directly unless you're very determined, but at least you know you can get it somewhere. ;)

Incidentally, I found your post trying to find a way to connect the loose end of my display to a project board. Did you happen to notice if the ends of your cable were soldered, or if they actually plugged into snap connectors of some kind??

    Hey,
I took a look at the cable from mouser.com, but I dont know if it will fit.

The cable I have is 122mm long and 4 mm wide. A very important part is that it has 4 wires. Other than that, the cable needs to be 5" long. The ends are plugged into snapconnectors.

    Im still on the hunt.

    Thanks for your suggestion!

the same thing happened to me with my 6860, which i have to send in to be repaired.

try checking ebay for parts, but while you wait you can still turn the laptop on with the media center hotstart button.

Alright, im checking out ebay as I type.

It sure would've been convenient if Gateway would just send me the cable. I dont mind paying shipping costs and all.

Yeah, Ive been using the hotstart mediabutton for a while now. The laptop is just fine. Thats why I dont want to send it in, paying shipping for a whole laptop instead of just a cable.

    Thanks.

I found a cable via ebay at Eastbay Electronix that may fit. It has 12 pins, so maybe there is a way to cut it to slim it down. Im asking the seller.

12 bux for ground shipping is indeed not much, but I dont live in the US or CA. Custom duties alone are 40%.

Wiping the HD makes it easier for them, but its extra work for us lol.

if the cable does work that would be great, unless it's the small board beneath the button and not the cable.

i asked if i could send it in without the HDD cause i know that it isn't anything software related and the customer service rep tried telling me they can't fix it without the HDD in.

If it is the small board underneath the powerbutton, then Im screwed!

Ok, I got reply from the seller and I think the density of the wires in the cable are ok. Just need more info on the ends of the cable before I start gathering the tools to cut it.

Yeah, Gateway's tech support is not really top notch :)
They are not really customer friendly too!
