I've been plagued with random black screen lockups for a LONG time. They can happen after 30 seconds of gaming or after hours. All drivers are updated. I'm about to pull the trigger on the new ASUS with the 460GTX but wanted to see if this issue was ever resolved before I do. It's been a great laptop otherwise. I have upgraded to a SSD Boot drive, otherwise it's 100% factory.

My 7808U did the same thing right from the beginning, I finally convinced Gateway that there was a problem and they ended up replacing the motherboard.

And if you send it in for repair, you may want to remove that SSD first.

It's out of warranty. I also completely formatted the original HDD which is now my storage disc in bay 2 so if I did they would get a brick in the mail. They also had an issue when I did try and speak to them months ago that I upgraded to Windows 7 but not through gateway...
Honestly I think that when Acer bought Gateway they completely abandoned previous model support which kind of blows.
Oh well, looks like I'll have a hell of a machine for multimedia use as it only locks up when gaming / intense graphics usage. -

I've had some sort of problem where the laptop suddenly shuts off after gaming after an uncertain amount of time. I will try your fix later today andros
By the way, what Nvidia driver are you using? I just downloaded the latest driver from the Nvidia website, and I think I'm starting to notice a drop in FPS.
