What is considered an acceptable GPU temperature range for the P-7811 FX ?
I have overclocked:
GPU: 700
Shader: 1750
GPU Mem: 950
And it has run steady for a couple hours with rthdribl running - most intense GPU app for burn-in IMHO. It levels out at 94C. I know that is hot, but any other benchmark or game it doesn't pass 80C.
It also doesn't lock up. But I know over time, high temps can cause issues.
I'm using official nVidia 179.48.
Do the DOX drivers really offer any improvement in performance and better (lower) temperatures?
-

94 is hot, below 80 is ok. I personally don't like DOX drivers. They do keep temps lower, but I find them to be lacking in performance.
 -

does that overclocking help in game performance at all?
 -

i get like 76C temps so 80 seems fine overclocked in games
 -

I installed the DOX drivers (181.22) but the temps are about the same, but get a slight boost in performance (from 9200 to 9400 in 3DMark06) and seem stable, so will probably just leave them for the time being, because not in mood to do uninstall / reinstall dance.

what is the fps boost you guys are getting from the overclocking?

what game?

If you have a notebook cooler then temps should rarely go above 75 to 80, even when OC'd. You didn't specify if you are using one or not but I'm going to assume this isn't while on your lap because that does increase internal temps by a lot.
I had OC'd my card last night at a left 4 dead party and randomly my computer would suffer from extreme slow down. Turns out my leg was semi-blocking the ventilation for the card and the temps bumped 100C so I ended up underclocking for the rest of the night to keep things under 80. -

No, wasn't using a cooler. I dragged an old one out I bought for my Vostro, but never needed it. It helped by about 5C, then again, it's a cheap Belkin one I bought for a 15".
when gaming, it's usually 70-80C max, but rthdribl stresses your GPU the most of any benchmark or program I've used.
Try running rthdribl, maximize the window (not fullscreen), and let it run for 30 minutes, let me know what your GPU temp is then. Probably 10-15c than what your notebook typically maxes at with games or benchmarks, at least that's been historically what I've seen. -

What is the performance increase? -

3DMark06 from ~8700 to ~9400. That is about 8%. My experience though has been FPS increase has been double % that of 3DMark06. So about 16% FPS increase i.e. Take you from 30 to 35. Again, it depends on the game. For CSS or L4D you probably wouldn't notice a difference since they should run at a decent fps without overclock. CoD 5 as well. Assuming you're running at less than native resolution though. 1920x1200 will stress any GPU completely.

I get up to 102c while playing Crysis. I know that's ridiculously high. At idle, it hovers around 43-45c. I'm not overclocked at all. I'm using 185.20 (with the modded .inf) from laptopvideo2go. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3.
Any ideas?

Stable, good temperatures top around 80C. You should consider getting Xfastest 185.20 drivers...
 -

In the process of d/l'ing it now. Can I expect a fps change as well?
 -

I played FEAR & L4D for 6 hours last night with OC using 179.48 nvidia driver..
My GPU temp. was 65c max.. -

Well, I installed the Xfastest 185.20 drivers last night. Performance was essentially the same, as were temps. It actually got a few degrees F hotter.... Up to 217f.
      -
 First reaction:
:O!?!? 217 F?!?! Your max temps should be around 80C max!
Second reaction:
Your high temperatures are going to hit your performance gains quite hard. Lagging, loud, active fan, etc... -

Any way I can address this??? I've tried the laptopvideo2go driver, the Nvidia stock driver, and most recently the Xfastest driver.

It has nothing to do with your display driver. It has to do with either your laptop's thermal paste or your fans. Are your fans running properly? Any unusual sounds? I suggest getting a replacement because your laptop is clearly overheating.
 -

The fans seem to be running fine. RE: the thermal paste, doesn't the gpu use a thermal pad instead? Suggestions on how to check if that's an issue or not? I've never disassembled this laptop before.
Getting a replacement really isn't an option, because I bought it used (at a sick price... Maybe now I know why)
Thanks! -
If it's still under warranty, then return it.
Is this a first time occurrence during a game or did it start happening recently? -

I'm actually not sure, as I just recently started using HWmonitor to keep an eye on temps.
How long is the warranty on these? Not that it matter because there's no way it's valid being that I bought it used and do not have the original sales receipt. -
Contact the seller and ask for the original receipt, etc... You can't solve your problems if you don't have it. Bottom line... If you can't get the receipt and have no way of returning the laptop, then you just got shortchanged...

Eric618,
Have you tried lifting the back of the laptop a little or used a cooler?
I know lifting the back of my laptop an inch is good for about a 15C reduction. -

I made some changes in the settings on Crysis last night, and propped up the back maybe an inch.... Temps lowered a LOT! Thanks!

i'm overclocked to 698/998/1798. when i boot my computer it reads 31c by the time it gets to the desktop. or if it was sleeping then it gets to the desktop quicker and it reads 25c. it idles at 39c. 2+hours of gaming (currently L4D, team fortress 2, crysis, dow2) leaves it at max 53c. sometimes the screensaver "aurora" leaves it at 52/53c as well if it runs for long enough. I have not underclocked (i know that's cpu anyway), nor have I applied any thermal paste. But I do use an NZXT Cryo Lx
