Class was about 2 hours and it was especially hot today in California. I'd say it was easily 80-90 degrees today. I was late for class so I just closed the lid (i changed the settings to automatically hibernate when you close the lid) and threw my 7805u in my targus bag and went to class. After class I went to lab and my CASE was EXTREMELY hot. I mean it felt like I was touching a kettle right off the stove. I'm guessing that it didn't go into hibernation mode. The media lights were on but it wouldn't come out of the blank screen mode. I held the power key and turned it back on. After everything powered on normally I checked my temps on everest and my cpu and gpu were 70-80 degrees (centigrade).
How badly did I damage my laptop? I am hoping it's insignificant damage because I'm sure there are a bunch of gamers/stressers who push their temps higher and for longer than I did. But my notebook was in a extremely tight compressed space with absolutely no ventilation and I'm kinda of worried.
-
nah... 80C is still fine... i stressed test my gpu on furmark for just 15 and 20 minutes and it was already shooting up to 79C... never in my life owning this notebook have I ever pushed it that high. if GFX card went towards 85-90, then you have something to worry about
-
The problem is that I don't have the actual temps that the notebook was running at (while) it was on during class. I had to wait a couple minutes while the computer was booting up so I could start everest, and by that time it probably cooled down quite a bit but it was still at 70-80. I'm afraid it went up to at least 85. I haven't noticed it acting strangely or anything though.

The way I've heard it, >90C is bad for GPUs, and >60C is bad for CPUs...
-
You probably took a lot of its long term life off of it.
-
You just made your CPU into a giant resistor (you lose current control action when the temp gets too high for a MOSFET) for a while. After you let it cool down for a minute it'll be fine. Unless you shove your laptop into an oven over 300C, I don't think the transistor itself will be damaged.
-
nizzy, how many "long term" years do you think he shaved off of it.
And don't scare the poor guy like that. He has one of the latest FX gaming laptops and you tell him it is gonna die soon. !!!!LOL!! -
lol..it's fine. There's failsafes built into the BIOS which will shutdown the computer once it reaches a critical temp. If it were still running, then you didn't damage it
-
You are fine. No one is in any position to tell you that you've lost long term life because no one has had these for that long. You keyboard keys will likely melt before anything else on your laptop, once that happens, you can start to worry.
-
Yea, you'll be fine. There is a guy at work that threw his old HP in his briefcase..warped the keyboard and part of the case. Looked a bit like the Dali Clock but darn thing ran fine.

alright thanks guys. i honestly wasn't too worried about it after i started it up and everything was normal but i just wanted reassurance.

It was a gateway and proud to say it was worth every penny as much as I abused it.
Edit: My girlfriend won't let me forget fact it fell off my car roof twice and didn't smash to pieces (soft concrete maybe?) -
has happened to me once or twice during my xp days. in a hurry, i quickly used the shut down command and closed the lid. i'd return after many hours and find the comp. whirring away like crazy, and extremely hot. opening the lid i would find the system hadn't shut all the way. the annoying 'program not responding' message and the system caught in a loop or something.
its best to check all the way. vista is also quirky dealing with hibernation, closing lid. -
6 years for a laptop is kind of long, but I don't think there is really a long-term life for a gaming laptop. It'll probably be out of date before the hardware fails.

I made a post about this before I was playinga Company of Heroes on my bed and the gpu hit 117C and that was after it cooled off for 20 seconds, runs fine.
-
its not good to run it at that temp long term, but short term it probly did little if any damage.
Accidently left my 7805u in my messenger bag turn on during class
