LOL. It's all good man. Nice to see we can disagree and discuss it like adults. :)

And about the "you didnt backup today" thing, you are, indeed correct. Acronis is set to append to the image set at 3am EST. :D (Which BTW is getting incredibly large I might add. It's probably time to just create a whole new base image)

nah, we are better than good!.

and i was counting on your back up running about midnight..lol
and good choice. i use acronis true image server with universal restore as well. and i love it! acronis is a no hassle works pretty much with out fail and never takes forever to backup an image.

Acronis FTW! Although I did find a bug where it would corrupt every single image made on my desktop which is using an ABit AV8 mobo and 2 WD Raptor 74Gb drives in RAID 0. It was supposedly fixed with ver 11, but it still happens. Im more than sure it's a compatibility issue with the onboard RAID controller. But that machine is getting pretty long in the toof, and I never really use it, so it doesnt bother me much. I have a base Norton Ghost image if I ever need to restore that machine.

you see my wording this time..."pretty much with out fail" had a few issues with earlier versions, but the server version seems to run fairly well.
but i did notice...if the drive has an error, the image wont take. is this the same for you as well?

    Hey,
Since it appears of stumbled into a bunch of raid experts / fanatics. One more question:

Too late for me since I changed my order to the 320GB as my second HD in my new P7811 FX instead of a matching 200GB, but isn't there a software based raid controller out there? May not run on Vista Ultimate 64 bit, though.....

Gateway says chip will allow raid in the P7811 FX, right?

I remember from setting up photoshop SCSI workstations that one of the PC / PCI slot SCSI controller manufacturers offered a software based RAID option. Was not Adaptec but someone else. I always used Adaptec and my latest Photoshop cruncher has an LSI. Might be recalling this from as far back as U160 days but I'm sure it allowed LVD disks so it can't be that far back.........Probably only works with thier brand SCSI controller installed....

If this is the case and there is a software based RAID solution out there and the chip allows it, couldn't you try?

    Don't kill me if I'm wrong.................Raymond

As long as you have two hard drives you can try software enabled RAID, its just not always a sure thing (from what i remember)

And technically if you want to run RAID with the mismatching disks you can, you will just be limiting your space on the 320gb drive. You can RAID 0 for 400 GB (losing 120gb of the 320) or RAID 1 for 200GB (and still lost 120gb of the 320, but be safer)

If you really want RAID then i would suggest selling the 200GB primary disk and use that as a good down payment for another 320gb HDD. Just be sure you make your recovery disks and all. Your going to have to reformat for a RAID anyways so mine as well get the best space you can. Especially since after you sell the 200gb disk you shouldnt have to pay more than 23 or 30 dollars for the 320 (pretty good deal)

Also, Vista itself supports software RAID, however not on the boot/OS partition. Meaning you can repartition your drive(or simply use a whole other drive) and stripe that via Windows for increased throughput, but you will not benefit from the RAID on the partition where Windows resides. It's early, did that make sense?

    Yup, thanks.

    I'll stick to that 1066 FSB and 2 - 7200RPM HD's as 2 separate disks until partitioned.....................Raymond

Uh... what does the 1066 FSB have to do with the hard drives?

Fast..................Instead of striping I'll enjoy the 1066FSB speed.

yeah but the speeds are in entirely diffrent areas and arent related

But i guess 1066 FSB is nice to have until Nehelam comes out. (waits with eager anticipation for nehelams die shrink and a new laptop)

    ^ Yea what he said.

IMHO, it all depends on what you do with your laptop.

Overall speed of data transfers using 2-7200RPM HD's when opening and working with large files in photoshop. I wanted to try RAID 0 using 2 matching 200GB's drives but not this time. I'm expecting a noticable difference in performance anyway compared to my current 800Mhz FSB.
