    Airflow and Coling Solution for FX Series

    OK so I did a test with my 6860fx with remover cover from HDD and the other one that I will call it Motherboard Cover. I used OCCT to heat the CPU. As for overall heating I just gamed for about 10 minutes and that’s what takes our HDD to almost reach 50C.

    A brief about our problem and solution:

    1. There is not any air getting in and out and the whole air gets warm and warmer by the time.

    2. That warmth spread inside the laptop warming other components like motherboard (which a good conductor of heat), plastic covers, HDD, heat pipes, etc. All this comes from clogged warm air inside by being unable to be cooled in order to reduce overall internal temp.

    3. When using laptop coolers what happens? It cool down the plastic covers and that cools down air inside and the air inside cool down the components, at our laptops its not because the cooled air gets inside but because of heat exchange laws.

    I’m thinking for a while what I should do to cool down my laptop especially HDD, following idea came up after I disassembled my laptop to see if I can fix the touchpad and I saw some things that we can improve at FX generation cooling system all of them related with airflow and clogged hot air inside.
    I have 2 parts where I what to focus and also modding laptop cooler by blocking some places of cooler to have better airflow inside the laptop (will speak for this later at section 3)

    Temps after 20 minutes of gaming without HDD and motherboard plastic covers at the bottom.

    1. HDD Racks

    a. There is absolutely no air flow inside HDD bays besides there are some open parts but that’s nothing. At the pictures below I will show what I would like to do with the plastic cover.

    b. The metal where the HDD fits it’s good to protect it and keep the heat. I thing we can use it as a good cooling element by doing some precise cuts to improve the airflow inside and increase surface so that we can increase the heat transfer by doing so. See the pics below.

    2. Motherboard cover

    a. This plastic has only the GPU cooler vents no other. There is RAM is the main source of heat and the are HDD closely, both create enormous heat inside. If we can cool down RAM things will change because RAM heats the air and the motherboard that conducts the heat and then spreads it across the whole motherboard together with chipset, CPU and GPU. Venting this part will be a bit tricky to get the most efficient results.

    b. Additionally we can open some vents short by length but in a long row to have better surface coverage. This will also do a great job cooling the motherboard.


    3. Laptop cooler

    After doing some vent openings we must insure that the airflow is going the current way (one way inside the cool air and the other side the hot air). No interference between airs currents are allowed to have 100% efficiently, if so we will have poor airflow that will reduce our cooling performance.

    a. To achieve this we must cover some parts of the cooler with stickers or something similar to block the heated air coming out of current vents and interfering the airflow by going the opposite way, so one way in one way out.

    b. We can also look inside the cooler and mod the airflow inside to increase air density and airflow to specific parts of the laptop to have better cooling, if we decide to throw air inside the laptop to have better ventilation.

    c. Also there is another thing that we can with both methods mentioned above and force air to go directly inside the vents by modding the cooler inside and outside with stickers.


    Personal I don’t own a notebook cooler ATM but even without the cooler the temps will be lower. I will find some tools and I will start modding.

    Note! Must be very precise when doing measurements and cutting things in order to have a prefect result.

    Request? Post the cooling performance of the coolers, also with they’re dimensions to find the perfect cooler for this mod.

    Warning! By the time this post will be updated (technical update, spelling, community suggestion for better mod, best cooler, easier way to do modification). This method of modding can be applied at other laptops. :D

    Very very disappointing.


    Man thank you for your very hard work and research. I think is will try your suggestions.

    its very true, when i play games or do anything thats resource demanding on my laptop, first of all the air that comes out is hot, then the rest of the laptop gets really really hot.

    I simply modded my Cryo LX with better fans (scythe S-flex 1600rpm) and run it @ 12V. Temps dont get higher than 82C max under load. my 7805 is equipped with a C0 stepping X9100 FYI.

    I dont really want to start dremeling slots into the plastic covers. My modded Cryo LX will suffice. Then again, i do recall seeing on the net that a particular company may be releasing a thermoelectric notebook cooler (works using the Peltier effect). That should be interesting if it can be overvolted!

    Notebook cooler blowing up with 3 fans-one center and two at the top will take care of the problems with heat. Your temps are good though...! Just wary about removing panels and so forth. My luck I'll drop the HDD or touch and somehow Fry the RAM. Good job here though.

    I have to say, my modified Cryo cooler does a very good job, since I hooked it to a 9volt power supply and added another fan under the hard drive cage. From the best that I can tell, the hard drive over heating has been the major cause of my laptop crashing becuse of heat. I think I might try cutting a few slots in the plastic to see if I can cool it down even more.

    The one thing I have to say about your diagrams for your cooler, it seems to me it would work better if you had the air forced up from the rear and exiting towards the middle. This way you will be forcing air into the existing fans as well as into the home made vent areas you suggested. Atleast this way it would be easy to do by modifying the nzxt Cryo cooler with just one fan for the hard drive. Other wise you will need to build your own cooler with a minimum of 4 fans, 5 would work even better.

    Ok fellas i am back with awesome news.

    first of all i will like to say i accomplished everything i did without spending a dime and without all the tools one is supposed to have or use.

    Unfortunately, i cant post any pics at the moment cause my camera is very far from me right now.
