Please Read if you have time, its a bit long but it sums up the story:

had this laptop for over a year now.
for the last month i was having I/O device error issues,

i decided to format the laptop-installed fresh vista 64 bit, and 3 weeks later, i get pauses/lag while listen to music without anything else running, it takes a longer time to boot up, it sometimes has start-up issues, and if i try to system restore it comes with a disk error.

When i decided to install a fresh copy, i formatted both of the hard disks. From time to time i'll get I/O Device error, when trying to copy/move files..and random freezes that cause me to restart the laptop which takes more and more time each time.

I'm not sure what it is, all my drivers are up to date, and i tried different bioses's.
i usually play WoW from time to time, and for the last 5 days, it doesn't log in, it just freeze's on log in which causes me to kill process.

If anyone has an idea please help.
I need this for my classes/work/personal issues asap.

    Thank you in advance!

Can you download HDTune and check your drives health?

It might be one of your hard drives having an issue. It kind of sounds like some files in your install have been corrupted and this might be due to some bad sectors in your HDD

Wasn't this an issue with the DVD drive?

Unplug your DVD drive (You'll need to unscrew something on the bottom and physically remove teh drive) and if the problem persists, come back.

If it's your DVD drive, I recall Gateway had an updated firmware.

There are tests and then there are TESTS! Don't know which tests you are referring too but you may have to download a disk test utility suite and run stress tests and analyses that look for hard errors. As I'm sure you know, the latter are usually destructive so you'll lose everything.

Before you run the destructive tests, have you checked your event viewer to reference any specific errors and event IDs. These can be informative and may point to the culprit. Even though you'll research the error on the Web, post it if you find one that points to your problem.

You mentioned your drivers are up to date, are your service packs?

By the way, I lost a drive just at about the 1 year mark. It happens but in your case I'm not so sure its your drive. I don't ever recall that specific error as an issue on my machine.

    Anyway, best of luck.

hdds can fail within a yr especially laptop hdds because then run very hot in laptops. the 7811 laptop hdd runs especially hot because it really has no airflow over the drives them selves. i would if in your position run the hdd test and check the health of the drive. an io error usually means something is corrupted on the drive itself this doesnt necessarily mean is a dying drive and could just be file corruption possibly due to a virus. in my opinion i think its a dying hdd but it could be something else.

keep in mind though im no computer technician so i may be wrong but in my personal experience with dying hdds (ive had a few die on me) this error you have is usually the beginning symptoms of complete drive failure.

yes a hdd failure can happen at anytime. I had an acer 3860 which the hdd died in 3 weeks of getting it.
