So, what do you guys think? Is it worth it to pick up a 6831 now that they're in stock again or should I hold my breath and wait for this upgrade?

I'm a little unsure about this 6860 model because the only place I have heard about it is on this forum, and Google has nothing regarding it.

I think after all said and done, you'll get a faster drive (7200rpm vs 5400 in the current release) for another $100 since the replacement is rumored to be $1349, $100 more than the current FX.

The 'newer' CPU doesn't count anymore as the newer batches of the FX all seem to have shipped with the upgraded T5550 chip anyways...inlcuding my FX :).

If you NEED it now i would grab one for sure . If you can wait a few weeks then i would just wait . there are only going to be a couple of changes from all that has been posted at this point, but again this is all speculation. Ive been keeping tabs as of late cause my brother wants one probably as bad as everyone else on the fence about pulling the trigger now or waiting for the refresh .

I just bought a 6831 from the local best buy. The bestbuy.com store said they were available. Sold by the time I got to the store last night, but they called around and found me another nearby. It has the 1.86 CPU.

So, there are some still out there. It pays to call all the stores. You can also buy from out of town and they will fax you the order form.

    Good luck!

I was one of those who decided to buy one last week when they all but disappeared from the stores, as well as going out of stock on their website. But on Monday, it was back in stock on their site.

And I noticed that Best Buy stores around where my 6831 was shipped out of (Maumee, OH) are starting to get them back in stock, according to their store availability listing. 4 stores in Ohio, 3 stores in IL/ME/WV, 2 in IN, and one store each in KY/MI/NH/NM/NY/RI/TX. For a few days there, only one or two stores in Colorado had them in stock.

I was going to wait for the refresh as well but needed a system soon - good thing I picked one up, looks like it could be a longer wait now that it seems that they're once again restocking the 6831.

Personally I'm gonna wait. One extra gig ram and a 320G 7200rpm HD seems worth the 100$ and i hope the system would recognize the T5550 processor on the newer model
and also, the originally price of the P6831 FX is 1350$, it's 1250$ now cuz it's on sale. So i think there might be some on sale events for the newer version once it comes out.
But i'm kinda worried that they might be installing Vista 64 bit in the 6860FX which would cause me some problems on drivers etc. In fact i'd rather sacrifice the one gig ram

That is one of my worries as well, the 64 bit Vista. But then again, 32 bit OS don't recognize four gigs of ram.

ryo1000, I would think Gateway would sell a Vista 64bit system with all drivers working, they would not sent out a product with driver issues, too many headaches. I think they put GB of ram in for the simple reason, its cheap, it makes it look beefer and fits right in with gamers like us that what GB of ram even if it does show any gains, just knowing its there is good enough :)

Well, i sure do hope so. But i have seen a lot of people experiencing problems with Vista 64 bit on this laptop. So i'm kinda worried that there might be problems further down the road.
