Hey, did you try altering the program from the all programs list. What I mean is that sometimes people like to condense programs instead of having the long list of programs. If you moved the folder from where it was originally placed in the list into another program folder, that message appears. It only seems to occur with Norton 2005, never seen it do that with previous versions

Nope haven't touched the folders. It also happened on the first laptop (this is the 2nd one I got today since the first one had a dead pixel) so it seems model specific.

Howard, do you have the full version of Norton 2005? Or did your Gateway come with the 3 month trial? 2005 is such a system resource hog I couldn't stand it. I put XP Pro into my system and ended up using Norton Anti-Virus 2002.

If you have the full version try reinstalling. However, I'm guessing your version shipped with the system so if you reinstall, you may get the same message again.

Ya its the 2005 trial. I figured it was 3 months free so what the heck, but to many issues, I'll just chuck it and install good ole PC-Cillin.

On a side note now I'm having issues with the backup program. Everytime it gets to finalizing the DVD it just hangs there and nothing happens.

    Howard,

This is a brand new Gateway that you just got and you're having multiple problems with it? Where did you buy it from and what model do you have?

I do have a small computer repair business, but I can't really tell what's going on. It would be one of those things where I'd have to see the system infront of me and see if there are other issues as well.

If there are other problems, I'd bring it back and either have them look at it, or do something about it for ya. What backup software are you using?

This is the new 7510GX from Best Buy. Gateway doesn't even have a support section on their site for. Its very new. Anyways I'm using the backup software that it comes with to make recovery cds, since gateway is to cheap to give you windows xp and what not on a cd. Its working now if I burn the backups on CDs rather then DVDs. Its very odd.

    Howard,
I did the same thing on dvd. It doesn't hang at the finalizing state...it hangs at the verifying data state...which who cares if the program verifys the data. I just turned it off and the DVD works perfect for me...you really don't need that program to verify the dvd to get the dvd to work. Hope yours was doing the same thing as mine and not actually freezing in the finalizing state...cuz that would be different.

Hmmm, mine didn't make it past the finialized part. I've wasted 3 dvds now. I've checked each one but I can't read any of them since it doesn't close them. I'll be sending a nasty letter to gateway. Other then that this is a nice laptop.

that stinks...not sure anyone will actually read that letter howard...heard their support is pretty non-existant. But it's worth a try.

Ha, well I tried their online chat. I was actually suprised they were open on sunday. This was regarding the antivirus issue and the lady basically told me to go buy the retail version of Norton. I was like like good bye and rated my experience poor. heheh

hmmm...co-op between gateway and norton...i think so. Why would you go buy the full version when it possibly won't work because the trial didn't work...especially when they're the exact same prog, just different time usage on them. Silly gateway support. If you know your stuff, these laptops are great...If you're someone who needs a lot of support....you're screwed when it comes to these things.

That Norton 2005 error that you speak of usually occurs when you try to install the full version on top of it, or Norton has become corrupted. In almost every instance that I have seen of this, an uninstall of Norton, and re-install has worked.

I use Norton Antivirus 2005 on Windows XP Professional, and I haven't noticed Norton using any extra resources.

AWI, Norton 2005 will slow down a computer by 30% on startup. That's what I meant as the difference is quite evident. I personally haven't had problems with Norton that other's have had. Yes, I've seen that error with 2005. If you go to CNET and read what people say about it for instance, I think it kind of explains it more than I am here. But I also work on computers, have a computer repair business dealing mostly with home owners and small businesses so I can usually figure things out a little bit easier. I just built a brand new system for a client. Prior to installing Norton 2005 you know when those bars scroll acorss on the Win XP screen. It will scroll 6 times before loading the desktop, after install it was up to 9 and 1/2 times across before getting to desktop. Basically you'd only see the slowdown on bootup.
