I got my CT10N yesterday and installed it in the evening (misplaced some screws so I had t wait till I got off work). I spend pretty much that entire evening and a good part of the night trying various programs (PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra, 8 Ultra build 2521 and Nero 8 with BD add-ons) to play some BD movies (Transformers and Serenity), none of which worked. Today I tried various nvidia drivers because a friend suggested that it might be that I need signed drivers, I'm all the way back to the basic P-7800 series drivers 176.15, no luck.
I keep getting "CyberLink PowerDVD requires periodic updates to continue playing back some new disc titles. Would you like to update now?" after I hit play. I say yes, it tells me it updated, but then gives me the same message again. Does this for both versions and Nero 8 it tells me something similar. I can open the discs up in explorer.
Does or did anyone have similar problems and if you resolved them, how?
EDIT: adding some info to the first post to help some of you folks catch up a bit. As it turns out this maybe linked to a firmware issue. The Drives are being shipped with manufacture stickers that externally say CT10N with firmware WA02, but arrive with a variety of different firmwares, some not even intended for this drive, but the CT10L (L is for LightScribe) version. Using Everest we can read the info and what version of firmware the drive comes with and thus far here is a sum up:
So we have working
WA02 (CT10N, WA02 on sticker)
W181 (CT10L WA02 on sticker)
not working (needs AnyDVD to disable protection to play movies):
YC07 (CT10L, WA02 on sticker)
and unknown:
WR06 (???)
Not to mention different manufacture stickers.
EDIT: I'm digging up better resources here then on any of the forums dedicated to this stuff, WTH! And I know one of the CDFreak admin is reading this!

I am almost positive its firmware because like I said this drive works for most people that recieved it. Any We know for a fact that it works in some 7811s and 7805s. In my 7805 the sony drive played movies just fine. I even reinstalled the os with this drive. Both you and I recieved it only a few days ago so we probably got older ones, And yes there must be a firmware update somewhere out there for it. Since this is an oem drive it would help to know where battery is getting them from. Its the oem part for something.
What I could do is use my new external hard drive i just bought and install vista ultimate oem that isn't sp1. My 7805 came with sp1. Then I can find out if this drive has been blacklisted after the release of vista. Thats how hdcp work if a drive is found to have a weakness in hdcp it gets banned in windows update I think. -
Check your factory date on your drive, mine was October 2008. Gonna test PowerDVD 9 right now, give me a few minutes.
-
Yeah I already paid about $60 for the update to powerdvd 9 ultra with no luck. I also tried a copy of the latest arcsoft totalmedia theatre from a friend and same issue. Works fine with anydvd. I'll take it apart in a little while and post the date of my drive when I install the internal bluetooth device.
-
my CT10N is the best ,I am very happy was the only one I could find that was a sata player so I was lucky and from Newyork 2 day Delivery too
-
Confirmed, only way to play Blu-ray is with AnyDVD HD.

My drive was also made oct 08. I think it said 10/16/08.
-
i have the same drive and use windvd 9 and haven't had a blu ray not work yet.. everything works flawlessly
-
This was an explanation I got on another forum that makes a lot of sense.
-
Here is my drive info, if everyone else with this could do the same. Go to guru3d.com and search for everest 2007. Run it, go to Storage>>Optical and right click>>copy all and paste there results here.

thanx, but did it work without AnyDVD HD, I notice no region settings?
-
Differences I notice:
Lightscribe support vs no lightscribe support
Model number CT10L vs model number CT10N
Region code setting vs no region code setting
Firmware YC07 vs WA02
Firmware date 9/12/2008 vs 9/4/2008 -
Wow, I have light scribe and a CT10L instead of a N...considering that I bought a CT10N on ebay. I know about the CT10L and the T10N, but I never really saw them for sale anywhere.
CT10L is from HP model notebooks, that's why it has lightscribe. The drive on the outside has CT10N, but it has the CT10L firmware, wonderful. -

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess YC07 is the firmware for HP's CT10L and WA02 is for the OEM version CT10N. I confirmed yesterday that it says on the drive itself that it is a CT10N.
Wondering if there is a way to flash it with the WA02? I really need some help figuring this one out. Extracting the firmware and a way to flash the drive.
EDIT: I'm just exchanging it to get a working one (LightScribe would be neat...if the drive would work normally). -
You still working on it? hehe
-
-
-
My firmware version is YC07.
-
Oh and battery hasn't replied to me in a week. My big fear is if you replace this drive you will be at square 1 when blu-ray has an update again like I'm sure it will.
-
I just got "Office Space" on Bluray , Now thats a great Bluray and just orded a Red swingline 747 stapler lol.....
-
I just pluged mine in and it worked.mines just a player it dont Record just reads you know I watch movies on it.thats all ,well good luck with your bluray drive
-
-
looks like i am in the same boat as you rangerxml... just came in and it is the CT10L same firmware version......... grrrrrrrrrr
Is he covering the shipping back? will the exchange cost you anything? -
I already had to return one drive to him due to his error and no he did not cover the shipping. I was sent a sony bc5600s. He said that drive would fit my factory faceplate. I also have this lightscribe version of the ct10l. I'm going to keep it becasue I'm sure an update will be comming out eventually. Oh and for the record my drive says its the WA02 on the lable good catch I thought I remember seeing that last night when I took the drive out. I wonder if lightscribe actually works lol or maybe we have the wrong firmware on a WA02 drive.
-
Well hopefully he covers it otherwise I will have to do a paypal dispute. ugh....
-
I still haven't written his ebay review and I'm letting him know that.
-
got my blu ray from him and it works great. i did, however, have to purchase software to play blu rays. windvd 9 plus Blu ray... i think it was $70 or something like that
-
-
my computer is recognizing a "L" model, but the drive reflects a "N" model physically on the drive itself
-
Thanks for the info... Looks like I might have to give Windvd a try
-
looks like a lot of people putting bluray drives in there 7805,s
i love mine looks cool to see a bluray on a laptop play
-
Well I have just wasted $70 on windvd 9 plus blu-ray. It does NOT work.
I have tried 4 movies and none play. Danny, since you say yours is working... what movies did you play? what exact version is yours? You don't by chance have anydvd installed as well ? -
well, i've played troy, 300, traitor, we were soldiers, body of lies, the borne series, kingdom of heaven... a few more i can't think of... one thing is when i first installed the program, i had to change the region to US. their site has a lot of good info and forums on trouble shooting the program to make it work. this is the version i have : 9.0 B14.084 no i don't have any other software to try out.... sorry..
this is the error i was getting: I have a Mismatch Between Disc and Player Region Codes this was the sollution: http://corel.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/corel.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=762719&p_created=1208455457&p_sid=6Z_DSTsj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTM3LDEzNyZwX3Byb2RzPTc1JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0xLjc1JnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=&p_topview=1 -
Well in my quest of making blu ray work i decided to reformat my laptop using the gateway factory restore option.
There was a surprise... it detected the blu ray drive and installed a gateway powerdvd blu ray player on its on.
I am updating the install of that app as i type this. If it works, I might have just found a easy and free solution to some of our problems.
will keep yall updated... -
I'm interested in knowing what differences in set up effect the Blue ray player. It could just be some random quirk.
-
ok none of it works... This was a fresh system... the included powerdvd bd edtion 7.3 from gateway had the critical component upgrade "loop". Windvd 9 just sits there... i did select the region and even tried 300 and troy nothing works but regular dvd's on both. Danny what video driver are you running? Any other changes?
-
Danny can you post the Everest info of your drive.
Ranger, lsutiger, have either one of you downloaded any lightscribe software to see if the drive actually does lightscribe?? Are either one of you running Win7, same results????? -
I am running the default OS for the Laptop -
I think I maybe tracking down the issue with the CT10L, I don't wanna give anyone false hopes so I'll keep this short, but I need to wait till I get home to test it out. And Danny gave me a clue that made me notice something.
-
Does the CT10N work fine, I am going to buy one off ebay for $125.99?
-
Yup from day one worked fine
-
Key word, CT10N works. CT10L thus far only one working, 2 not all marked CT10N.
And no, thought it may have something to do with the Windows firewall, but alas. -
I ordered a CT10N, and I have PowerDvD 9 ultra, I hope it works
-
Anyone having problems with BD playback? (7811/7805)
