Just got back from Best Buy after purchasing my first laptop ever, the Gateway M-6864FX. Right off the bat I noticed some good things and some bad things.
Pros:
-Sleek FX design
-Fantastic graphics card
-Unbeatable price
-Set up was easy
-Nice screen
Cons:
-Slow CPU
-Flex on the left side of the keyboard
-Volume adjuster is a bit loose
-The front left foot or rubber pad is a bit shorter than the rest, the computer is a bit wobbly because of it
-It slides around my wooden desk very easily, specially when opening it
-Gets a loud when I installed WoW and WoW:BC
-Only a 200GB hard drive
I've only been using the laptop for about an hour or two so far so more problems could arise or not. If your interested in buying this and have any questions, please feel free to ask.

3dmark6 tests please?
-
*EDIT* Installing 3dmark6 now, pretty big file 500mb...
-
how slow is the cpu? is it really noticable?
-
No No No... Just if you compare it to the new P8400 or P8600 it is slower. It is fine, also I did run 3dmarks6 and it scored about a 3,700 3dmark score.
-
I'm sorry I don't understand that: Gets a loud when I installed WoW and WoW:BC
What does it mean? -
how is the graphics card??
-
I think he means the Optical Drive is LOUD.
-
That is the laptop I was looking at just yesterday.
Have you noticed if it gets very hot playing games?
I have read that some people think it gets too hot. -
I just purchased this laptop as well. My 1st ever laptop purchase so it's hard for me to compare to others but so far I'm very impressed bang for the $$$. It was loaded with very minimal adware and was easily removed. The HDD is very quiet and fast. I already loaded Team Fortress 2 and it plays it without a hiccup on high settings. It downloaded TF2 average speed was around 620kbps. Battery life is a bit over 2hr playing games and over 3hr just surfing.
Pros:
Price
Dedicated videocard
7200rpm HDD
HDMI port
Cons:
Optical Drive seems fragile (1st laptop so hard to compare)
Does get a little hot playing games but easily tolerable
If anyone would like me to do any testing just let me know.
More to follow as I have time to use it. -
It does get quite hot while playing video games but nothing serious.
I've already done some testing on it:
-3DMark06 Score: 3,640 (you can get it to 4,000-4,400 with overclocking)
-With a non overclocked GPU you can run Crysis on LOW-MEDIUM settings at 1280x800 resolution.
-With a non overclocked GPU you can run Call of Duty 4 on almost MAX if not MAX settings at 1280x800 resolution. -
seems like the price is back up to $849 at Best Buy.
-
Yep the weekend deal is over.
-
Heres the Non FX version of the laptop:

Not much of a difference besides color and harddrive space. -
They were sold out around here, so i asked my bro to pick one up for me saturday in Mass. where he lives. $749 and it was tax free week
cant wait till next week when i see him.

I played Team Fortress 2 for over an hour on high settings and it never got uncomfortably hot. I'm sure its not as taxing as Crysis or COD4. I have been trying to find a tool to underclock my CPU & Overclock the GPU but have had no luck so far. Everything that has been suggested has not been cooperating with Vista64.
I'm logged in Windows and I assume with full admin access, but still says I need to be logged in as Admin...I feel quite NoOb, but can someone help with my oversight?
Overall I'm very pleased with the purchase. I'm writing on it now in fact while on vacation.
Thanks in advance for any help. -

I'm probably getting the M-6862 this week (same config but not FX and different HDD) was was wondering who the processor performs? Would it be better then a 1.9ghz TL-58 last-gen Turion X2?
I really was debating between the 6862 (basically same as this laptop) or a DV5Z with a weaker video card (ATI 3450) but newer processor (PUMA 2.1 ghz turion ultra) for $100 cheaper.
But it just seems like the savings of $100 isn't worth the performance loss. Plus apparently the DV5z runs hot as hell, but does this one too? Suggestions? -
The 6862 will be far-and-away better.
It has a T5750, 4GB RAM, and a 250GB Drive.
The 6862 also has the HD2600 graphics with 512MB of DDR3 RAM.
The DV5z has MAX the 3450, which has a 64-bit interface, while the 2600 has a 128-bit interface. I think the 3450 has DDR2 also, which knocks it down further.
The 6862 will run rings around the DV5z, without even trying.
The video is AT LEAST 2-3 times faster.
Well worth the $100 difference.

To be honest (and this is coming from someone who still has faith in AMD) pretty much every C2D including the lower-end Pentium Dual Core CPUs, completely tears a Turion up. It sucks to say that, as it was once very much the opposite, but its true. You will get much better performance, cpu and gpu wise with the 6862. Which, again sucks to say, as the dv5z is one sexy beast. Maybe look into spending a bit more and getting a dv5t with a better video card such as the 9600M GT? I'd get one of those over the 6862.

yea i was thinkin about the dv5t but that'd run a minimum of $900 probably after coupons and before taxes. That's kinda higher then i want to go. I dunno why I'm even obsessing that much. I'm coming from a Turion X2 TL-58 1.9ghz w / ATI x1270 integrated graphics and was mostly satisfied. Just was upset that gametap games would run sluggish if they were any of the 3D gametap games (like american mcgee's GRIMM especially) and would like the not have the computer lag up as much w/ video playback and HDMI output video quality etc.
I just hope the HDMI out on the 6862 outputs audio as well. My old laptop w/ integrated graphics output both, so I wouldn't want it if this one didn't transfer audio as well via HDMI.
