Your FX should be set for two speakers only. Your surround-sound receiver will do the decoding when the source material has surround content.

Are you connected directly to the receiver or through a TV?

Typically you would go from the HDMI port on the laptop into your Audio/Video Reciever, then there should be a display out from the receiver into your LCD/Projecter etc.

HDMI in general is 2 speaker output for Dolby Pro Logic. if you want true multi channel you need to use the SPDIF with an optical mini SPDIF jack in the headphone jack.

I believe the 7811 7801 and 7805 have hdmi 1.3 which is capable of 5.1 you just need to make sure you have a 1.3 compatable hdmi cable.

Currently I connect my 6860 directly to the TV via the HDMI cable. The TV is always connected to the surround-sound receiver via an SPDIF coaxial cable. The lappy is set to "Digital Output Device (HDMI out)". I get full surround-sound (granted, my system is still only 5.1).
