Is there any way that you can mod a FX edition laptop (7811, 7801u, 7805u, 7808u, etc) to have a backlit keyboard?

I don't know if a compatible keyboard is available, but anything can be done with enough modding. That just brings up the question, how much modding are you willing to do?

Realizing of course there are more than just teh 78xx series of FX computers :p

Is there a way to back light the keyboard... sure. Can you do it... maybe, but if you could i doubt you would have to ask.

There are no simple "replacements" so a swap out wont do it.

You can do a simple mod of running very very small LED lights under the kepboard to just give you spare illumination (though its not true back lighting it gives an effect that some people like... though most dont)

You can laser cut the keys (the symbols) and then have micro LED's ran under the keys so it will give you true back lighting.

So you only have really 2 options:
One is relatively cheap and easy to do, though it isnt really back lighting so much as having an "underlit" keyboard. The other is quite expensive and completely untried (though the principle is perfectly sound) though it will give you an actual back light effect.

Or you could just get a USB LED Black light and have your keys glow really cool colors in complete darkness :p

I don't want to have to do anything overly complicated, but if the results were nice, then I would be willing to do quite a bit of work.

this has been asked before, I think what it came down to is you either have to mod it yourself, or the other option is to get the glow in the dark letter stickers to place on your keyboard keys (I realize that that solution doesn't really provide a backlit keyboard though)

The asus laptops really are so flashy and amazingly designed... for instance:

    http://event.asus.com/2008/nb/g70/index.htm

but the fact is, they just aren't nearly as powerful as the P-series in the equivalent price range. In that link, the asus looks sick, but when you look at the specs, you'll see it's still using the Santa Rosa chipset, DDR2 ram, and for some reason they decided to SLI 8700's!! whyyy!!!?
