I bought a anew Gateway M7315u for xmas ,2 weeks later the touchpad would freeze and at the same time the sound would go away when I played a DVD.
    or:
When I play a DVD the sound would go off and the touchpad command would freeze.
Restarting would momentarily correct the problem only to re-occur within minutes.
I Sent the notebook back to Gateway repair center in Texas at my own expense $27.00 and it was returned with windows vista re-installed but the problem still occurring soon after.
I still cannot get help from anyone in the US, only from India and they don't even speak english let alone understand what the heck I am talking about and I have spent at least 200 cell phones minutes with tech support for nothing.
Then one day I was adjusting the display screen viewing angle and noticed that this would trigger the sound and touchpad to freeze. I repeated this several times and it was the same result every time. When I called Tech support, they thought I was nuts or something. To this date I cannot get any help from anyone and I have a New Gateway Laptop piece of junk with all the hoopla but won't play a DVD with sound and no working touchpad.
Gateways are junk do not buy.
Thanks for any Help you can provide.

Have you tried reinstalling your drivers (or even trying new ones)

There might be a fauly in the system between your sound and touch pad drivers (it would be REALLY weird if its true though so its a long shot)

:) I had the same problem and discovered that two wires (black and white) are routed directly under the “–“ touch sensor. These wires exert enough pressure to decrease the volume. The touch strip can be easily removed with some care by snapping it out of place starting at a front corner and working across the keyboard. I fixed this problem with a short piece of black electrical tape rolled sticky side out around a thin toothpick. With the toothpick removed the compressed tape should be slightly greater than the distance between the bottom of the touch sensor circuit card and the inside of the touch strip panel keyboard side. The wires are routed from under the keyboard toward the back crossing an aluminum tape shield. Place the tape perpendicularly across the wires between the keyboard and the shield. This prevents the wires from contacting the touch strip and is not noticeable when the panel is reinstalled.

You can also send it to Gateway letting them know of the problem; it is intermittent depending on the physical orientation of the computer.
