Hey there guys, I had a pretty basic question when it comes to computers. I was wondering if it was healthy for my laptop if I simply used Sleep for most of the time [read; Nightly] rather than shutting down and booting up again? Mostly I do it via sleep because it keeps my desktop in tact and its generally a much faster process.

As long as your laptop is plugged in, sleep will have no noticeable effect other than allowing you to start up more quickly. On battery it will drain the charge a little since the system continually pulls a small amount of power while asleep (my laptop will stay in Sleep overnight without fully draining the battery). It isn't unhealthy for the laptop, e.g. won't potentially shorten the hard disk life (it's spun down). Hibernation is another option if you want to save the system's state when shutting down, but shut down takes longer and it uses up HD space. Advantage is that it doesn't drain the battery.

If you are using sleep then don't completely close it, just in case it wakes up and overheats.
Personally, I use hibernation. It is not as fast as sleep but rarely has unusual problems and gets me back to where I was much faster than booting up and loading the various applications.

Oh, I got you. I noticed something kinda along the same line, If you have the lid closed and you are using a external monitor, when I reboot it will keep rebooting until I open the lid. I can close it as soon as I see the windows load screen.
Basic question; Shutdown/Sleep
