Hey guys, I was stoked to find this website and thread! I saw this deal yesterday in the Sunday flyer and bought one at a local store. They didnt have any in stock so they just ordered it for me, should be in by the 8th I guess. I had no idea I was getting a better computer than what I thought until I found this review, man what a deal. Right now Im working with a Gateway MT6840 that works ok, but I need a little more power for photography editing, which I've recently gotten in to. This seemed like a pretty good deal so I decided to pull the trigger on it. My receipt indicates this as being the same SKU and model number everyones been talking about, so I'm just hoping when it gets here that it does indeed have the i5. I'll check back next week when it gets here :)

Don't compare apples to oranges. This one doesn't beat the best out there. Nothing can beat its value for money at the present.

Well you made a huge upgrade. As long as its Black it will say Black/Black on the outside of teh box and its the SKU number I gave on page 1 you are good to go. The Core i5 430 is faster than a T9600 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo with 6MB cache so its a super fast processor with 4 Core (well 2 real Cores + 2 threads) which makes it run like 4 cores to just about every program.

Here is a YouTube video of the exact same system watch it all.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDpftT06Xug

what seems to have happened was that Intel could not supply enough 32nm Core i3 processors to Gateway in time. So Gateway had a huge order to fill from Best Buy, Best Buy had ordered about 10,000 of the Laptops. So instead of not full filling the order and lossing Millions, Gateway decided to use the next available 32nm CPU that would work, and they went with the 32nm Core i5 430M. Which means their percentage % cost for each units goes up slightly for the better CPU. But they complete the order and still make a profit. And they decided not to spend the extra cost re-lableing the Laptop boxes or ordering new Stickers.

So that was a deliberate act on Gateway's part? I thought it was a manufacturing accident, and the reason they're out of stock is because they recalled all the ones that haven't been sold.

Well, it seems that the good times may just be over. You can't even bring up the page for the NV5927u online anymore at bestbuy.com. I'm actually going to try and go into one of the stores and try the raincheck thing another poster mentioned earlier. But I suspect they could weasel out of it by claiming that the fact they took it off Bestbuy.com constitutes its being discontinued.

It's a shame; I woulda bought the thing just for the Blu-Ray unit alone. I mean, a Blu-Ray laptop at that price point?

BTW, from what I understand, the performance difference between the Core i3 and Core i5 in laptops is fairly small, given the limited TurboBoost capabilities. Is this so?

We all got to accept the fact that at this point of time this is(was) a killer deal. I don't think any of the units were sent back. I'm sure it got sold out. There are people who couldn't get one saying that the price difference between i3 and i5 is only $30. Wonder from where they got those figures as these are not yet readily available. Also you just cant compare this with any future deals coz with technology everything seems to get outdated in months. And since i5 is still new to the market, getting a laptop at this price is without a doubt fantastic.

The price difference from a Core i3 to a Core i5 infact is likely to be only $30.

At a manufacturing level where they sell them by the Pallate or by the Gross in 10,000 unit bunch bulk like that yes.

But to the end customer like you and me its hundreds of dollars.

As far as the Performance differences from Core i3 to Core i5 They are huge for several reasons.

#1. Resale value Core i5 will hold its value its astep above Core i3.
#2. FEatures Core i3 DOES NOT support Virtualization and other features
#3. Speed Core i3 DOES Not Turbo Boost.
#4. Graphics the Core i5 CPU Intel HD Graphics Chipset can Both Turbo Boost so it Turbo Boost the GPU also according to the latest AnandTech Article. Core i3 will not Turbo Boost at all.
#5. The Core i5 430M offered in the Gateway Laptop is faster than a T9600 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo with 6MB cache. Thats a fast CPU, and the 430M is Faster by as much as 40%.

Nobody cares what Intel charges Gateway per processor (or the difference). Its the price that we user are charged when buying an i5 processor that matters.

wait til you start outputting 1080p via HDMI to your 40" HDTV

I was playing the HUGE 1080p AVATR trailer which is like 5 minutes long and Transformers 2 on Bluray 1080p to my. 23 inch but also tried my 42 inch Plasma and its jaw dropping. Super smooth perfect Audio via HDMI.

And the CPU never went above 12%. because its sharing the work across all 4 CPU's.

Its the Best $300 I ever spent. Sold 1 on craigslist for $600 and had a $80 Best Buy gift card. And to think I almost spent $379 on a useless NEtbook.

It's been pulled from the Best Buy site. Guess nothing good lasts forever.
What ticks me off is that many people (I was reading the thread at slickdeals) were buying these up in large quantities, then turning around and selling them for a profit, so it left almost no stock for the rest of us.

Well thats true I don't know what you mean by Large quantities, I saw one post on Slickdeals of one guy who drove 300 miles to 8 different best Buy's and got 10 of these, he is selling all of them and wants to make a $100 profit on each, thats $1,000 profit for him not bad. But definiely not LARGE quantities.

I sold 1 made $100, frankly because I wanted a quick flip and because the Market is now saturated. $650 on ebay Free shipping it went in like 2 hours.

On my Local Craigslist alone, in Miami there are 5 of these listed, so what I did was list one, and price it at $300 not the $600 or $700 people are asking

So now all these flippers trying to scam people on Craigslist will have to eat their laptop because everyone wants mine which I listed as $300 for Sale no one wants to pay $700.

So I get a ton of angry emails from sellers asking me to drop my add, and tons of people who want to buy it.

It's large quantities when several people are buying 8, 10 or 12 each.

LOL. Does large quantity now mean a trailer full of them ? No point in blaming others for doing that. They were vigilant and took advantage of the oppurtunity. Actually Ice Cold's this thread was not all late for members of this forum when he posted it coz i had all BB in my area having it in stock. I actually didn't need one was but tempted though coz i had a 10% coupon BB had sent me. There is no way i'm gonna buy one now and move my beast aside.

Edit : Wonder with these kind of pricing by all manufacturers, are we gonna see the death of netbooks ? I though netbooks were a good option for people on tight budget but not anymore.

Why is that??? and wait till the next refresh to Core i9 and beyond 32nm to 25nm cheaper faster better, way less power consumption.

I thought Netbooks were catching on, sort of cheap ruggedish disposeable.

Why risk my 17 inch DELL beast when I can carry around a $300 NetBook.

Unfortunately now, I have to carry around a disposable $300 Gateway with 4GB of DDR3 and a smoking Core i5 which is faster than my 17 inch quadrouple more expensive system I purchased 1 year ago. Weird.

    http://hothardware.com/Articles/Intel-Arrandale-Core-i5-and-Core-i3-Mobile-Unveiled/?page=3

some good reviews. Intel's hit yet another home run with the 32nm Core i5 Arrandales.

the next refresh in Q4 2010 should be even more amazing.

Now I can comfortably wait for 25nm systems in 2011.

Has anybody noticed even though there is 4gb of ram installed there is only 3.68gb is usable????? It is my understanding that the gpu has 128mb dedicated memory and that it will share physical ram if necessary, but it will only share usable/addressable ram. If any one has any 2x4gb sticks they can plug in, I would be real curious to know what shows. Think we need a BIOS update for all 4gb to be usable. I remember my old Everex XT5000t had this issue with the original BIOS and was not corrected until a later BIOS. My Gateway P7811FX does not show these characteristics, it shows 4gb installed and 4gb usable.

links showing installed vs usable/addressable ram.

NV 5909 for $699 CDN has an i3 and 5650. Writing my review right now.

    Crappy screen, awesome everything else.

If GW does an FX version of this with a backlit KB, i5, 5670 and 1600*900 screen then my M17x has probably worn out its wel-wel-wel-welcome.

lazy bios programmer maybe - you have Intel HD IGP but is isn't fully disabled so its using some RAM. My NV 5909 has that too.

I'm reasonably sure the GMA HD built into the nv5927u doesn't have its own memory. I think it's just more of the usual computer company bs marketing jargon. If you check the Gateway specs page it says; "Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HD with 128MB of dedicated system memory". Which is a bit contradictory, no? It's either dedicated OR system memory.

You are way too late but try calling around different Best Buy's and asking for the SKU number I posted on the frontpage.

I would give you a 50% chance of getting one I got 2 of them

And Re-sold one for $small $100 profit making mine only $400 - $80 gift card I had laying around.

    Give it a shot

pretty insane for a CPU Core i5 430m thats faster than my T9600 2.8Ghz CPU with 6MB cache

Definitely a play on words, but I'm still a little skeptical, as to what it all means.

    Definitely contradictory.

In my experience the readings I'm showing represent a BIOS limitation. Reminds me of installing a 32bit OS on a 4gb ram system. A quick way to see what is going on would be to install 2x4gb modules. Not worth it to buy them for testing but if had some laying around or in another machine and swap to test I am very interested to see what shows.

There ARE some of these laptops available in stores...I was lucky enough to get one for my wife during the original 1/31 sale (before BB pulled it from the website) and was so pleased with the performance that I was kicking myself for not getting a second one. Fast forward to today, I was out at the Harrisburg PA store, killing time before a doctor's appointment. This particular store does not keep their laptops in a cage, just on a shelf below the displays (+1 for them) and I was looking at another Gateway model when I noticed that they had THREE of the infamous SKU 9721671 sitting there  ...needless to say, I grabbed it immediately, didn't say a word to the blue shirt prowling in the PC area, and paid for it at the front registers. $499.99 +tax out the door. Big YMMV, but check the stores in your area...

I work at a Best Buy in the Computers department and we literally sold out of these before the store even opened the day they went on sale (they got picked for online orders). We were able to order them from our warehouse still, but I think its highly unlikely that we have anymore left at the warehouse, nor have we gotten any new shipments of the laptop in.

As for the person earlier who said people were buying them in bulk (like 8,9, or 10 at a time) then that just means the employees that sold those laptops were not doing their jobs. I believe we are not supposed to sell more than like 3 (maybe 5, I forget exactly) of ANY item in the store to a customer because Best Buy is a retail store, it is not a wholesale store.

As for the stores not being allowed to sell the laptops before the sale date, they are not allowed to refuse customers the sale unless it states in the ad that there is minimum quantity the store will have (which that ad did not have). The general rule of thumb is that if it is in stock, then we can sell it unless the ad states otherwise.
