Looks like a good deal. Will Gateway allow you to purchase the 3yr warranty if it's bought at BB?

Nice - i got mine for $1250, but i think i will still PM; it may only be $50, but that is still worth asking for (besides, who wouldn't be happy saying they got this beast for $1200...). :)

This includes a 1 year warranty? I'm debating on whether I should go the P171S route through gateway for $1650 w/ 3 year warranty plus shipping and taxes or this.

Yes - the 6831 has the standard 1 year warranty from Gateway.

So basically with the P171S FX from Gateway, for the extra ~$600 I get a better process, slot dvd burner and finger print reader along with 2 extra years.

I could buy a processor better than that one, and even exteend the warranty for less than $600. Is a slot dvd burner even important? Is there anything better about the 171S?

I think if you got the 1250 w/ free game they wont match cause the game is worth 50.00 (ie the difference)

Sloat Load DVD is personal preference. A tray has a slightly higher chance of becoming damaged due to it sticking out while a SL has a slightly higher chance of getting a disk stuck in the drive.

Woot! If its 1199 with a free game! Another 50.00 beans off! I had a bad boot block that went on my original, that was replaced and now my Reciept date is 02/04/2008... + 14days = 2/18/2008.. Thats next monday! Wee!!!! I now got this amazing laptop for 1199.00 + a free game! I just ordered a new CPU, a T7500 for 199.00 and if I can sell my old CPU for just 50.00 bucks, the upgrade cost would be 150.00. Thus I get this great laptop with a T7500 CPU for just 1350.00 + a free game! Not too shabby!

If gateway pushes the P6831 into $999, it will wipe out all other gaming laptop in the market and really create a hype.

It's definitely good way to advertise, and a cheap way to build a name.

Who would thought of getting a gateway laptop? and for serious gaming? from bestbuy?

Now, if they give a better LCD and a matte keyboard instead of shinny one, then it's perfect.

    Until the 6831, not I.

Now, I can't really see the 6831 getting pushed to $1000; they would have to be losing $ at that point. but even at $1200, there is no denying how good a deal this is. I mean, the 8800M GTS is one hell of a card, easily worth 300-400 (given other companies are asking 500 for the GTX upgrade). Now, i have seen other laptops with specs like this, but witout the GTS, for the same price or more! So yeah, it is a great deal. Lets just hope not too many corners were cut to make it so cheap..

I love the price -- but does the 1440 x 900 screen not bother anyone else besides me? I would want at least 1680x1050 at this screen size.

By the folks, I was able to negotiate about 20% down with gateway on the P-171X-FX version (with the 1900x1200 screen).

I was wondering does anyone else think it just might be better to order this from gateway and negotiate down on the P-171S-FX version? To something like $1300 or less? At least you get a better screen (1680x1050 and slightly better proc).

Jeez 1199 is really hard to resist.

You can negotiate prices with gateway?! I wonder if toshiba negotiates....

I wasn't originally considering the gateway but its looking more appealing everyday!

Question though. To what extent can you swap out parts? processor, ram, hdd, anything else? And... how does this affect warranty?

    At $1200, it's already a loss.

No. You have to wait until Sunday, but that would be past the 14 days. You just got really unlucky. Sorry.

Processor, ram and hdd can be swapped out.

It will void the warranty (unless you save the old parts when returning for repair and add it back in -- but this technically still voids the warranty).

I think the only thing that would not void is adding an extra hd (swapping the existing one probably voids it as well.)

I just read on best buy reviews someone said that gateway graphics drivers don't support dx10, i'm a newbie in this department (among others) can you run other drivers or do you need to run the gateway ones?

You don't need to run the Gateway drivers, you can run drivers from other sources. Many people on the forum recomend the laptopvideo2go drivers as they are much better and stable than the stock drivers. You just have to find the driver that works with the card.

It is hard to predict the future. Penryn and 9800m GTS might be out by then - for about $600 more. The next really hot notebooks will be out late summer for BTS.

Sell this for $1000 then if the new stuff is really tempting.

when I picked this laptop up here in Canada this past weekend I looked at Bestbuy USA and it was 1600.00 and in Canada is was 1350.

I was like OMG something is FINALLY cheaper here in Canada with our dollar being stronger or near even with the US dollar...

Oh well, maybe bestbuy Canada will have a sale to, who knows.

There's no way in hell they're going to sell it to you at that price before Sunday. Best Buy takes a loss selling it, and makes up for it from kickbacks from Gateway. Gateway's not going to give Best Buy a kickback if they sell it before Sunday.

Buy it now and go back on Sunday to price match it. If you are worried about it being a misprint or the sale not really happening than don't open it so you can return it without a restocking fee.

For those interested in getting an FX, there will most likely be a limited number available on sale. Why not order one now over BB's website for a store pickup? That way you have a better chance to get one. If in comes in before the sale, you can get the difference back during the sale.

My question is, how long will this sale last? I'm guessing a week? It wouldn't make sense if it was a 1 day sale. But it could be possible.

Secondly, if you do buy it online with in-store pickup option, but the stores are sold out. If the sale ends before you manage to get one, do you have to pay the extra or will they give you the laptop as long as they see the receipt?

The sale is 1 week. If the stores are sold out, you wouldn't be able to buy it online with "in-store pickup".

1 week? Gotcha. So supposing I just tell them to ship it to me and it's somehow defective, can I bring it into a BB store and swap for another? Or do I have to do that online also?
