I just bought a Gateway P-7805u and I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 with it. I was wanting to know what OS would be best for it? Vista Ultimate 64? Windows 7 Beta 64? Windows XP 64? Also, if I wanted to install Vista Ultimate 64, do I just need the Gateway driver disk?

or you can install Ubuntu. Linux is quite nice unless you play really hard core games -
If I install Windows 7 64, what drivers do I use? The drivers from the backup disk I made from my laptop?
-
I would not install Windows 7 as a main OS, its in beta, and it expires after 7 or 8 months, just use Vista 64bit, the laptop came with it, most of the BS us seasoned Vets have dealt with is fixed with SP1, then enjoy your lappy

You'll get prompted for the audio driver update via Windows Update. But the graphic card, better install first Nvidia's mobile drivers.
Then run the gateway driver install for the webcam/mic.

I think I would like to install Windows Vista Ultimate 64 rather than have the Home Premium. From there I'll probably load Windows XP or Ubuntu. As regards loading Vista Ultimate, I can use the driver disc I made with the gateway backup software to safely load all laptop functionality, correct? or will i loose any functions along the way? Again, I appreciate the help and advice

How about Vista 32 vs. 64? Which one is better?
-
I'm on the verge of installing Vista 32 Ultimate to replace Vista Home 64. Should I do it? I notice some strange behavior with the 64 version for my games and also Firefox..
-
I have Vista 64 Ultimate and have had no issues with. I am using that on my main computer but running Windows 7 64 Ultimate on my Gateway FXs amd so far so good. I will probably use the beta till it expires in 6-8 months

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 beta on my 6864FX right now. Yes, I'm using it as my main OS, but the reason behind it is that this ISN"T my main computer. I don't have that much installed on the 6864FX so if I have to I will just use the recovery disc or do a clean install. I plan on doing a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 when it is released.
I have to say that it's rock solid so far with the only problem coming from the ATI Catalyst Control Center uninstall problems I had. Got that fixed and it's hasn't had so much of a hickup since.
I wouldn't recommend running Windows 7 beta on your main pc UNLESS your using it in a dual boot configuration as the second OS. As the main OS I'd be using Vista Ultimate 64 or Vista Home Premium 64. I have 7805u as well and I'm leaving that one with Vista HP 64 for now. My desktop is running Vista HP 32, but will be upgrading that to Vista Ultimate 64 shortly.
I went with Ultimate for the desktop because I want to use Remote Desktop Connection to access it from the road.
If you are planning to go with Vista then analyze the features between the different version and see which ones you need to have.
Either way, the 7805u will run any of the available OS's very well.

Do NOT install Windows 7 as your primary OS. I was tempted to but absolutely do not try it. Why you ask? If you manage to run into a bug that the Windows team did not manage to iron out and lose access to all your data, you will be liable because you chose to play around with a beta product.
Vista x64 would be the "best" OS for the P-7805 since you can play with DX10 settings in games. -
Windows 7 as my main OS since December on my 7805u (my main computer that I almost keep running 24/7 - no it does not overheat), no problems at all. A bug that wipes out your data? Uhhh right....

It's your choice to select a beta product over a stable OS that has a service pack and two years behind it. -
Yes it is, and I think I've made a choice choosing a product (Windows x64) that never crashed on me and runs 5x faster. Rather than a product (Vista x64) with 2 years experience behind it and crashing on me. To add to that even having compatibility issues with some of my programs. =_=

Yeah I second that. Windows 7 is already in a very stable state and it is such a nice OS to use. I've been running it for a few months now as my primary OS and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The latest build 7048 is truly superb.
By the way we are pretty much at the release candidate build now so it's beyond beta - i.e. SMALL bugs. -
iaTa,
Where did you happen to get build 7048?? I didn't think it was public?? If you care to share but don't want it public, can you PM or email me?
Thanks,

Where are you getting this from. -
-
Windows 7 is great, what about after Sept 09, when the beta license runs out

Then you apply a crack that allows you to use it forever
, although you'll probably reinstall 7 when its officially released since it will be even better.
Windows 7 is a great OS, I used it on my P7805u for about a month and have been using it on a couple computers at work since build 7000 was released. -
is this a crack that is out now, or one you are hoping for?
-
Not sure if you can discuss that here? You can reunlock it like 3 times after your legal W7 serial expires.
-
we are talking about a hypothetical crack
-
No there is one already available - Orbit30's PlusPatch - although as AGlobalThreatsK stated you can just use an official Beta key for now and when RTM is reached you will want to reinstall anyway.

Im curious: Is a Triple Boot system possible?
XP Pro > Vista > Windows Seven ?
I have dual boot on my desk top, with each OS in its own partition on the Primary drive.
Would 3 partitions on the C:\ drive, each with its own OS work? -
-
yes you can.
Best OS for P-7805u
