I was just wondering what is the best virtual memory setting for this machine? Should I keep it on automatic like it has been, or should I set it to a specific value? Btw it has 4gigs of ram ddr3.

There are no such things as stupid questions; only stupid answers. Just saying automatic would have been enough.

And thanks iaTa for the even better answer.

That's not how the quote goes. It goes something like this:

"There are no stupid questions, only stupid people."

Although I have no basis, because my results were random most of the time.... using automatic or setting the min to 1 gig and max same as the amount of ram seems optimal for me.... just a feeling though

Spokenword you are correct...but in iaTa's defense, some people do post more than just a few "bad questions" (not to be confused with stupid which is a demeaning term) - bad questions meaning rapid simple questions that can be answered by a simple google search instead of "flooding" a forum with post after post...

iaTa has been helpful..even to me...but spokenword is correct

    So, perhaps in this thread:

you'll tell us what you think of your new toy.

    I'm liking mine.

Actually, FWIW, the question is not stupid.

It is a reasonable question for someone who has not researched the settings and wants to optimize thier system to ask.

Google: best virtual memory setting and you'll see that not only is the question asked often, but there have been a variety of answers from "let Windows determine it" to specific settings.

I believe that the "automatic" or letting Windows determine it is the generally accepted best answer.

    Just an observation.

I wanted to let everyone know that I tested the different paging file settings on my system, ranging from Automatic to the recommended settings to my own other settings. I have found that double the recommended setting gives me much better performance than before. I was skeptical at first but I can vouch that everything is running much smoother now. I set both min and max to 12266. This question was definitely not "stupid" as I am now yielding better results in every day tasks such as browsing the internet and using photoshop cs4.
Hope this helps some p7805u owners out there ;)

    Thanks for the input andros-
So it performs better at 12266 than having the automatic manage paging files checked? You said double the recommended settings..if it is 4090Mb wouldnt double be 8180? Or did you mean triple which is 12270?

I have always been told that regardless, letting windows manage the paging files is the best option as obviously Windows knows how to manage its running and backround process's most effeciently...So its best to leave it up to the "mothabrain"

So you now have a 12.2GB pagefile.sys in your C: drive..

If you want to determine the ideal pagefile size you need to open the most programs you'll ever have open at one time and check the pagefile usage as you work in the programs. Then just set the pagefile slightly higher than what was being used. That will always leave you with slightly more than the ideal amount, in case you forgot a program and open it in the future while multi-tasking and forget to increase the pagefile amount. There are several tutorials for this available online.

Obviously this discussion is for P-78** laptops with at least 1 HDD.

The windows "recommended" amount should be 150% of your RAM capacity, not 100%.

Yes, I am speaking exclusively about my p7805u when referring to 12266 as paging file setting. (recommended was 6133 on my system, and like AGlobalThreatsK said that's 150% my ram) And yes I do have 12.3 gigs of space taken on my hard drive now, but from the performance increase I am getting, it is well worth it. If your recommended setting is 4090 go for 8180 min and max and see if you get better results like I did. Good luck :)
