As the threada title states, I am curious about getting the basic one and replacing the screen. I was curious about the what is the best quality replacement screen. If someone can specific with model numbers and where to buy them I would be greatly thankful.

Define your opinion of best. Obviously Dell's new WUXGA on the 1730 is one of the fastest response time notebook lcd's at 5ms. However, Asus's WUXGA on their G2 line of notebooks is supposed to have the best gamut (color reproduction). One might even like the new WUXGA LED backlit display on Apple's 17" Macbook Pro. Once you choose which type of display you would like it will be easier to search for part numbers and suppliers.

yeah, we need some good solid proof of what actually is compatible with our laptops. I would like to replace mine as well by the end of the year.

    1) Best gamut first, response time second.

    2) Would love to get led

    3) I would like to know which laptop screens actually fit -- the site I have found on this forum is http://www.screentekinc.com/

Not sure which is the best quality WUXGA screen that fits this laptop from this site (or others).

One of the most highly regarded is the panel from the Asus G2S, the B170UW02 V0 (AUO TFT). Highlights are the 8ms response time, 72% color saturation, 2 CCFL backlight. Many of the LG's and Samsungs are 25ms, I believe, and some are single backlight.

As far as color saturation goes, I haven't seen one better.

    Specs:
    http://auo.com/auoDEV/products.php?func=info&product_id=137&items_id=2

    Wide Aspect Ratio
    Size: 17"
    Model: B170UW02 V0
    Resolution (pixel): WUXGA 1920 x 1200
    Aspect Ratio: 16:10
    Active Area (mm): 367.2 x 229.5
Pixel Pitch (mm): 0.191 (per one triad) x 0.191
    Mode: TN
    Number of Colors: 262K
    Color Saturation (NTSC %): 72
    View Angle (H/V): 140 / 120
    Brightness (cd/m²) (5 points average): 400
    Contrast Ratio: 600 : 1
Response Time (ms) (at 25°C): 8
    Power Consumption (W)(typ): 14.5
    Interface: 2ch LVDS
    Supply Voltage (V): 3.3
    Backlight: 2 CCFL
    Outline Dimensions (mm)(typ): 382.2 x 247.5 x 6.5
    Weight (g)(typ): 680
    Production: Q2, 2007

As soon as I get a couple of things sold and round up the cash, I'm going to give this one a shot.

Hehe he must be a gambling man or he knows of a way to return things if they dont work that we dont know about yet :). either way the panel from the specs looks AMAZING!! so heres to hoping it works . i myself i if i upgraded would still prefer an awsome 1440 screen cause i have to play in native res or not at all just a thing of mine :).

I'm waiting on the engineering specs to come from AUO. Once I see the mechanical drawings, engineering specs, and interface details, I should be able to determine if I can make it work. If not, I will just eBay it.

I'm going to add a Blu-Ray DVD burner/player at some point and want 1920x1200.

    Hello all,

I too have been heavily researching upgrading my LCD and here is some of the information I've found:

-Samsung LTN170WP-L02 is a 'plug n play' replacement for the one that we have now. It only does 1680x1050 but it has some good points: 1) Its cheaper, 2) its a direct fit, 3) games should still run pretty fast at the higher res, 4) and its risk of dead pixels should be low (see my concerns below).

-LP171WP7 is 1900x1200 possible drop and go replacement for our notebooks but I'm not exactly sure.

What I have been thinking about:

    1. I don't want to screw with trying get the LCD to fit. I really want one that I can drop in.

    2. The higher the resolution the higher the risk of bad/dead pixels. IMHO, I would rather have a lower resolution screen be perfect than a 1920x1200 with some dead pixels.

    3. I would like to replace the screen without damaging or marking up my 6831. While its not as sexy as a MBP, I would still like to keep it 'scar' free. ;-)

    4. SmartMicroUSA seems to be a really popular company to go with. They are listed on ebay as well as having their own site. Looking through many forum discussions of people who have upgraded, most talk about this company. They will guarantee their screens for zero dead pixels for a slightly higher price. That is something I'm willing to pay for. I was just reading about our HP counterparts who are trying to do the same upgrades as us: http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/t-221429.html

    5. I wish I has some info on Dual Backlights vs Single on battery life performance.

    6. A chart of the labeling for these screens would be very helpful. For example, in the HP discussions, one person bought a screen that was one number off from another and it didn't fit. They concluded the last number must designate the mounting orientation of the LCD panel (screw locations, etc..). It would be nice to understand this more so you can pick out the LCDs that will be a drop in replacement for ours.

I welcome any input here because I really want to ditch 1440x900.

Lastly, here is where I'm at:

The Samsung LTN170WP-L02 is very attractive right now for the following reasons:

-I know it fits, I'm not making a 'guess'.
-Lower res = less risk of bad or dead pixels
    -Cheaper
-I've been researching this much longer than I anticipated.
-I would like to upgrade and move on. ;-)
-Gaming at 1680x1050 shouldn't take a huge hit from 1440x900

Anyway, just my humble thoughts. I welcome your input.

    Cheers!

    -K

Looking for a drop-in replacement also. The current one is fine, but better is always better. :)
Looking at these models for sale on replacement sites, how do you know which one will fit this laptop. Waiting for a definent drop-in, high resolution screen before I drop the dough. Just not sure what to look for on these websites listed in this thread.

Thanks for the info Kickstart. Where did you get the info that the Samsung LTN170WP-L02 was plug n play? I'll wait till someone else actually tries it out first before attempting to upgrade.

I also think 1680x1050 is a great resolution. Balances out performance and quality real well.

I was thinking the exact same thing, until I decided at some time relatively soon I'd be adding a Blu-Ray reader or burner. 1680x1050 won't get you 1080p (1920x1080) on the notebook's LCD, but 1920x1200 will. I can still run my games in their native resolution, with the loveable "black bars" if performance at 1920x1200 is an issue. Of course, the 1920x1080 LCD is slightly more expensive, but not enough to be a factor for me.

For me, the times I'd be playing blu-ray movies vs. gaming was about 2:1, which finally tilted me to the higher resolution screen. Otherwise, this 1680x1050 would be on it's way to me now!

Crpngdth2001: I agree, 1080p would rock with a 1920x1200 screen, have you found any that will drop into our Gateways?

I still have not had any luck.

Could you post about your experience swapping the LCD? Here are a few questions that I have:

Any problems that you ran into?
What did you use to remove and replace the rubber plugs that cover the lid screws for the LCD?
Did you have any issues separating the lid casing to get at the LCD Panel?
Any advice for what to look out for when doing the replacement?

    Thanks!

Honestly the swap was alot easier than I expected. I used my fingernail to remove the rubber plugs. They have double sided tape on the back of them and i just stuck them back in when I was done. After removing all the bezel screws I used a credit card to seperate the bezel from the rest of the lid. It came apart quite easily. Once apart it is as simple as unplugging a few connectors. If i remember correctly there are 3. The main LCD ribbon, a smaller ribbon for the webcam that is attatched to the main ribbon, and a two wire power cable from the lcd to the inverter. There are also metal brackets on each side of the lcd that must be unscrewed and placed onto the new lcd. All in all it was very straight forward, just be careful when unplugging the ribbons. I am the worst photographer in the world, and the glossy screen is not easy to capture, but here are some pics.

It is a 1680x1050 display. I haven't tried via HDMI to my TV, bu that has nothing to do with the LCD, that is GPU dependant. Paid $198 with shipping.

Pics are up. (Last post, page 3) I am a terrible phtog, and it is tough to capture the glossy screen. The viewing angles for me are 100% better. On the original Samsung I would get the "negative" look when going off axis. this one does get dim, but nothing like the original.

Thanks...didn't see that page on the thread at all till now ;-). Looks great. Im gonna hold on to the stock screen for now and then upgrade when I feel the urge .

At least I know now what to get. I'm not looking for 1920X1200 at all (had that on my XPS Gen1 laptop) and I ended up downscaling to 1650X1050 and increasing the windows DPI. I already have my PS3 for BR movies so dont need that res in my laptop.

    Thanks again

Good job and great info! The viewing angles are probably the worse aspect of the original screen. $198 is not bad.

As fas as people concerned with HD, clean 720P is outstanding and Blue Ray looks super on my old Sony KD-720P set. IMHO this is a gaming laptop so have not switched screens with the dell in my sig...non scaled screens suck to maintain frame rate but looks way better than fuzzy scaled screens.

    Well folks,

I wanted to update you on what I've done:

-I ordered the LTN170WP-L02 from SmartMicroUSA.

-They have a website as well as an eBay listing. The eBay listing is cheaper so when I spoke to them I asked if I should order via eBay instead. The lady told me she would give me the same deal as on ebay. This includes the zero dead pixel/zone warranty and the cheaper prices.

-The cost was $225 + $18 for 3 day shipping +$4 for insurance.

I will let you know when it arrives, the condition, and how the upgrade goes.

Oh, the lady told me that they ship LTN170WP-L02 compatible LCD displays. So its not actually a Samsung but some other brand.

I did some research on SmartMicroUSA and others have had good experience with them so I'm not too worried. I figure it will be a learning experience and atleast I'm not spending $600.00 for it. ;-)

Oh, I also asked her this: "Since we know the LTN170WP-L02 will fit into my notebook, are there any other higher resolution LCDs that match the layout and connectors of the LTN170WP-L02 that would also fit into my notebook?" I was hoping she might have a list of compatible LCD screens but I don't think she really understood the question.

I think they just want to match what you have currently in your notebook. This is a shame as I think many people would like to upgrade their LCD. A little compatibility guide would make this easier and probably sell many more LCDs for them.

Anyway, this is my update and I'll let you know how it goes,
    K

    Update #2

-I received an email with my order # from SmartMicroUSA about 30 mins after I placed the order.

-Today I received an email from FedEx with the tracking number and the two day estimated arrival time. (Not bad for $18.00).

I'll post another update when I get it. Maybe with pictures! ;-)

Hey hammer, can you share that desktop pic you have with the city landscape? It's quite nice. Thanks!

    Update #3:

    1680x1050 Rocks! :)

I received the new display from SmartMicroUSA today via FedEx and shortly after decided to replace my screen. It was pretty easy as the others had said. I feel very comfortable about changing out any display now.

    My thoughts:

-1680x1050 is a great resolution for this notebook. I'm not sure how the text on anything higher would look. I mean I think the text at 1680-1050 is pretty small.

-I think SmartMicroUSA is a great company! They were nice, easy to deal with, and got me my display in 2 days! I would give them a 5 out 5!! I will be doing business with them again.

-The New Display: No bad pixels or dead spots. Great resolution. It has that glossy look to it which is fine. The brightness is about 8.5 out of 10. For the price, its a great deal.

If you are going to swap your display here are some things to keep in mind:

-Give yourself an hour with plenty of light, a place for lots of screws, and

-Have a nice, soft cloth for laying the displays on.

    -Take your time, don't rush.

-I found the greatest tool to get the rubber feet out and separate the display case. I had a Swiss Army Knife (the smaller one from Target) that had a white plastic tooth pick. I had actually never used it but it worked great to pry the rubber feet out and separate the display case. Its plastic so it won't scratch anything and small enough to separate the case.

If you have any questions, just let me know.

Thanks to Hammersfd for all the info when he did his swap!

    Enjoy!
