I may be mistaken then, I bought the slower 4200 ram because thats what my machine originally came with. Most likely my FSB would go up to 667 instead of 533 mhz if I would have gotten the 5300. :(

Have any of you with the 5300 ram checked your FSB speed, freeware such as CPUz will tell you?

Since day one, any time I tried to use usb 2.0 devices, they would work for a few minutes, then disconnect and reconnect at 1.1 speeds. This happened no matter what was plugged in, even if it was a single SD card. So, I send it back to gateway for the techs to fix.

Comes back once with a factory wipe and bios update, problem still exists.

Comes back the second time, same exact thing.

Comes back the third time, no dice. Nothing about the laptop was changed at all, even after explaining to them on the phone that the chipboard might need to be replaced.

This was after hours of phone calls explaining to the phone support techs, and for the third shipment a supervisor, that all they did was wipe the machine and the problem was not solved. I even tried installing XP instead of vista to see if it was a software issue, same problem. It's not my devices, either, because I use a bunch of them and they have no issues on any other machines I have. Nobody could tell me what the techs did at any of the places it was sent, either. The techs for gateway are worthless.

    Steve,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have the Gateway MT3707, have had no major problems with it. All of my USB ports work fine. In fact, I just purchased a USB TV tuner, and it works very well.

Generally, I am happy with this computer, but if I were to nitpick I could find a couple of things wrong: The keyboard could be more firm, with bigger nubs on the F and J keys to help better with touch-typing. Also, I find the wireless card a little weak, and it takes a little long to locate my network.

Finally, my 1.6 Ghz processor gets really maxed out with many applications. But since I use this laptop primarily for e-mail and surfing the Net, it suits me OK. I don't know what would happen if I were to install Photoshop on this thing.

okay. i downgraded from vista to xp. got all the drivers. went to play half life 2 episode one today, to find out my drivers are out of date! GASP!

so i go to the ati site to get the latest (7.7). download. open. it tells me that setup cannot find the driver that supports the os nor the hardware....when i've got catalyst 6.14.10.6631 (so obviously not the latest! GASP!)

i suppose what i'm saying or asking is how do i upgrade the driver to the latest ati version? i really love that hl2, but more importantly if i can't upgrade drivers then the real question is, do i go back to vista (shuddddddders.)

    hey can anyone help me
i just purchased the mt3707 and i can't get counter strike source to run, i get an internal error direct3ddisplay9 error to be exact i'm not sure if its the video card (ati radeon xpress 200m) or vista or some other problem, i've tried updating all the drivers and just can't figure it out, it plays for maybe 10 seconds in game before crashing to that error. Source works fine on my desktop which is half the computer this is so i just don't get it.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    Yeah,

I find the wireless to be very weak. It takes a good two minutes to find my network, and my router is in the next room!

I've been toying with the idea of buying an Intel Pro wireless card and popping it in this puppy. Does anybody know of any compatibility issures?

Otherwise, this is a decent laptop ... for the money. ;)

Hi, I just bought the mt3707 from newegg. I don't know what people are saying about the wireless being weak...My router is on the floor of my basemant while I am on the top floor in my room and i get 4 out of 5 bars. So I guess that's not with everyone. The major problems I have with this computer are two...first the keyboard but that can't be fixed oh well Ill live...but the other problem...is the start up, i've removed all the bloat ware, and it takes around 15 to 20 minutes to start up. I changed the BIOS so that the hard drive boots first but that changed nothing. After I get the OS's splash screen I get a backlit backscreen for a loooooong time and then the OS starts to load. During that long period of nothing, well nothing is happening that I can see, the hard drive isn't spinning, nothing in the dvd drive is trying to be detected. When I took a look at the BIOS boot order it had a bunch of USB devices...things like USB DVD Drive, USB Keyboard, and other things like that. I don't know if they are there because I got this computer refurbished and the last user had them, or does everyone have them and can I not disable them.

I just purchased one of these for $375. It does not have the original OS restore discs or the A/C charger. If you own this laptop, would you be willing to burn me copies of the original discs it came with? I would like to do a complete restore without all the bloatware that it has on it.

    Part 2.
If you happen to have an extra A/C charger (or know where I can get one) please let me know that as well.

    Thanks mucho!!

I got the OS restore disc and AC charger from Gateway for free! What great customer service so far! I am trying to remove all the crap that comes pre-installed on the computer. I inserted the OS restore disc and I must have made a wrong choice because it reloaded everything including the bloatware. Can someone out there give me directions on exactly what to do to load just the OS and necessities and not all the extra crap! Thanks!!!

Where the hell did you find one for $350? Anyway, about the bloatware, delete everything that you dont want or anret going to use, that what I did, and never had any problem. I got rid of Google Desktop seeing that Vista has its own search. Thats just an example. I think you can use your better judgement and figure out what needs to stay and what needs to go. ;)

Actually I got it off eBay. A guy selling it bought it at Best Buy and only had it for 2 weeks. He sent me a copy of the receipt (he paid only $299) and I was able to fax that into Gateway to have the ownership transferred to my name and I have like 10 months left on my warranty. AND like I said earlier, they sent me a free OS disc and AC charger!

So far I am liking the laptop. Have run into a few Vista problems with programs that I used to use that are not compatible!! One thing that I am having a problem is with a TV show that I downloaded as a torrent. When I try to play back the .avi file it says that the right codec is not found and won't play it. I did a search online and downloaded a "vista codec pack" that is supposed to have all the required codecs in one pack and install them on your computer. Well, the file still won't play in either Windows media player or Windows media center. Can anyone out there help me out with fixing this problem??

    Thanks much!

GOM player, which is free and downloadable from CNet, will play any audio/video format you want. It is also a very good player in its own right. I did run into a problem with it on my desktop, however. If you play Bioshock the GOM player will interfere with the game. This is a known issue from the 2K Games website's forum. I fixed it by uninstalling GOM but other than that it is a great free player that has it's own built-in codecs.

    Hello,

I converted my latptop from Vista to XP and have had no real issues. I thank this forum for all their knowledge and help. The one thing I would like back is the performance and battery life icon application that appears normally in the tray. Anyone have it or know where to get it?

    Thanks, John

right click the task bar and go to properties. then click the notification area tab. at the bottom there should be a "power" option to check. that will bring that the battery icon.

Hey guys. I posted on the first page of this thread and am still lovin the 3707. Only deficiency I can find is the weak wireless card.

One question though...trying to communicate with a couple of buddies on Yahoo IM and we have the ability to converse via phone online. For some reason my microphone does not seem to work although the computer is telling me its functioning normally. Has anyone utilzed the built in microphone or do I need to add one to the laptop?

    Thanks.

I am also one of the first posters in this thread and still pretty much in love with this machine. As far as I know, the MT3707 does not have a built in microphone.

Hi all. I'm new to forums so I don't know if I'm replying to or creating a new message. But, here goes. I bought a Gateway MT3707 last night at Best Buy.
They had a display model for 449.99. I told the sales dude if the manager would lower the price to 399.99 I would buy it. (it didn't come with a battery BTW)
He came back and said, how does 299.99 sound. So.......I bought it. I don't have it as yet because they wanted to get the Best Buy info off of it and restore it to original condition. So, I've been browsing for 3 hours trying to find a battery for this model and I can't find any information at all. Gateway's website is of no help. Can anybody tell me where you might find a battery for this machine? Thanks in advance!! Oh, I have 2 Gateway laptops already and I love them both.

To those who downgraded from Vista to XP, I hope you guys can help me out.

I downloaded the drivers for MT3707 from the Gateway Support site. However, the video driver won't install.

The wireless adapter is also not being detected properly. I can't see Wireless Connections in the Network section.

    Thanks in advance.

hi guys, i'm new in this forum and i'm desperate for some help... i bought the mt3707 last june and although i knew gateway doesn't have international warranty (i broguht it to brazil), i still decided for this model due to its nice configuration, very low price (599) and good hearing from this forum... so far, i have loved it: very nice processor, lightweight, very fast to start (once you uninstall the right trash), nice screen and so on... my only complaint was the same as several of you: the very weak wireless... although the router is upstairs, i cannot connect to it anyway, although anyone with vaio, hp, dell, averatec and so on can... anyway, my nightmare started this morning: when i started the computer, the screen started blinking and after a while it got dark, which looks like an inverter problem... any hints on that? my greatest fear is that no one over there related that before... if this helps, in a couple of months i'm coming back to the us for a 3 week staying, may be i can contact gateway???

I've had no problems with the wireless, excellant connection to our westell at 20-30 feet away. Anywho, i've rolled back to XP and can't get the sound drivers to install no matter what i do. I've downloaded every sound driver from every similiar gateway laptop and no dice. Tried to manually install and everytime it says "This file does not contain information about your hardware." It's seriously starting to aggravate the crap out of me.

For those with the MT3705 going from Vista to XP.

The Wifi drivers for the 3702/3701 seem to work great.

If your finished with all that but still having sound driver issues, like i was, i found the solution.

All the instructions here are right although you HAVE TO UP TO SP2 and all the updates. I had the same sound driver problems where it wouldn't appear in the System Device Manager when i tried the real tek instal trick, wouldn't work with reboots and every single attempt without updating.

Soon as i updated windows 100% with sp2 and everything the sound worked BEAUTIFULLY

I got a MT3707 for my 16th birthday 2 years ago. I loved it when I got it. Currently, I'm deal with a screen problem. My backlight doesn't go on at all and I have no idea how to fix it. If anyone has any tips, I would love to hear them. lol. I want to try to have this computer last me through college.
