When I turn my laptop it will display the gateway logo and then the windows logo and then the screen will go black. The computer is still on and I can see the processor is working but the screen is off.

This has happen once yesterday and then I reset it and started up agin with no problems but today I had to reset it 3 times because the screen was always off.

I haven't installed any software recently and I have made a complete virus and spyware search, nothing was found..

    help?

sounds like your gpu is dead or dying - I had a similar occurence and it was due to a poorly designed notebook with poor ventilation that caused the gpu to overheat and the capacitors to leak. If ti's under warranty I would have gtw replace the entire thing

I was thinking that it might be something related to this

When you try to start Microsoft Windows XP, the computer may appear to stop responding (hang) with an empty, black screen immediately after the power-on self test (POST) is complete and before the Windows XP logo typically appears on the screen.

This issue may occur if one or more of the following elements are corrupted:
    • Master boot record
    • Partition tables

I bought my gateway a few weeks ago (it runs on Vista) and this morning I encountered a black screen after half an hour of internet use. I tried restarting the laptop doing ctrl+alt+delete twice, but that didn't work. I'm thinking of waiting until the battery runs out then taking out the battery and putting it back in. I'm not sure what I can do besides turning it in within the 30-day laptop screen warranty. I'll try contacting gateway support later today.

I chatted with Gateway support and she was very helpful. Hopefully I won't have this problem reoccur again. She just told me to hold down the power button for 8-10 seconds. Then if the problem persisted I was to contact her.

Is your warranty with Gateway still valid? Because it seems that you've tried alot to solve the problem, and it's a comfort to know that it might be time to ship it out to Gateway for them to repair it.
