I want to upgrade the DVD drive to a Blu-Ray player. I know it can be done because I've seen an upgraded 7805u on ebay. I'm just not sure where I could get the drive. ebay has some posted but they are shipping from China for around $150. Not sure I want to risk it not working when I get it. They say that the drive will fit the P-7811.

..or if you want a guaranteed compatability, I'll sell you mine for $250 shipped. It also burns DVD/CDs/Dual Layer DVDs/and it's not some knock off.. it's a nice Sony :)

Found another thread where they had some posts of the upgrade working. Thanks for the info, next time I'll search a bit harder before starting a new thread.

Yes. It can be done. I purchased a Sony 5500s from an eBay seller in Hong Kong and it's legit....but here's the kicker. It's a Region 3 drive which means it only natively plays DVDs and Blurays from Asia. BUT, you can get around it by getting AnyDVD HD which will bypass the copy protection and allow you to play ANY disc from all over the world. I paid $135 for my drive. The Region 1 drive is selling for $300 on Newegg.
