Looking for what's in the title; a blu-ray drive for a 7805u. I managed to snag one with the WUXGA screen (whined until they gave me the display copy ;)) and I'm eager to take advantage of it.

I've hard talk of the Sony 5500s and another one that has a cl10 in it. Anybody have any other good suggestions?

Also, I've found good prices for some of these on Ebay, but they're all from Hong Kong and other various places in China. Is it a bad idea to purchase Chinese electronics at a discounted price, or are they of just as good a quality as the ones on Newegg?

    Thanks for all your help!

CT10N is a good low cost alternative to the 5500S, I would prefer a bit more of a selection though. Anyone run into any compatibility issues with there BD drives and certain movies like was posted in a review on the Newegg.com?

Thanks catttman. Might I ask where you purchased yours from? Like I said earlier, I'm a little wary of buying discounted Chinese products.

picked up a CT10N yesterday off ebay for $125, will see how good it is. Already packed a Blu ray movie into my backpack so when it arrives to my work I can just install it right then and there.

Will this Blue-Ray Drive work with a P-7805u, or does it need to be SATA? If this will not work, where can I find a good deal on one that will? Thanks :)

The CT10N is SATA and should work. I'm still waiting, it shipped last week, but still hasn't arrived. Its only the 4th or 5th business day depending how you look at the international date line and it takes 5-10 business days to get here 8(

I bought it on eBay, you can find it there between $125 and $150, the normal price if you buy it from an electronics store is just under $200 where as the SONY drive with the same specs (but a slot load variation also available) is $300+.

Mine took approx 7 days to receive. Shipped from China (Hong Kong) to NC and packaged very nicely. Used ebay seller Battery918. Last I checked he had them at 125 or best offer + free shipping. All is working fine so far, using ArcSoft Total Theatre for BD playback. Easy upgrade also.

I got the drive and its installed with the software I got in the box, but it won't play any of my BD movies. I keep getting a pop-up that says I need to download an update, which I already have. Anyone got any tips?

Mine is doing the same exact thing and i just got it for battery. Send a message to him there seems to be a problem with the firmware on his latest drives.,, I'm sure of it. THe problem is you can't go to lg and get an update. I even called them. These drives are oem so you need to get a firmware update from a vendor such as dell or hp. LG will not supply an update what so ever since this is not a retail drive. You can use a program called anydvd hd and I bet you it works just fine. The problem is the copy protection hdcp. Its the stupidest thing ever. Its just preventing people that own legal movies from playing them. Anybody with half a brain that wants to bootleg stuff will just bypass it with anydvd. Or download them already ripped with the copy protection removed. Please bug battery I want one with an updated firmware aswell or a firmware update. If he sends you a fix can you please reply to this thread. I really don't want to have to run anydvd forever. As a note the sony drive is easy to get updates for.

he has been great replying to my emails untill the last 3 days of no replies. I guess the problem was bigger then me just getting an old drive and now he is aware of it and trying to find a solution. To behonest I'm happy I'm not in this boat alone because then he is more likely to fix it. Worst case I'm sure this would have happened to all of us sooner or later anyway when the next blu-ray update comes out. One day we will probably all have to flash out drives the way this broken hdcp technology works. Oh and don't buy the sony direct load drive from him. It doesn't come with a button to eject like some models of that drive have. I'm sure you don't want to have to go to explorer and press the eject button. Also the faceplate on that drive doesn't fit without a modification.

Oh I just wanted to add that in a few months different manufacturers will start shipping laptops with this drive. So it may eventually be easy to get an update for it. Like dell uses the t50n and had an update for it. I tried but it wouldn't flash to this drive. It does coeme with a utility for flashing these drives. I didn't see an option to back up your old firmware though but there may be one. Now that would be nice if we could get a firmware dump off of an updated drive.

I've already upgraded to the latest version and have even gone and paid for the $60 upgrade to powerdvd 9 ultra. I even tried another program for blu-ray playback and it does the same thing. Works fine with anydvd hd though. These movies all played fine when I had the sony bc5600s drive installed in the laptop. I returned this drive to the ebay seller battery becasue he said it fit fine. It does fit but he also never told me I couldn't use the factory faceplate. The ct10n fit the factory faceplate since the dvdcombo drive was also an lg. Also the ct10n seems to work for most people not needing anydvd but it just seems a few of us have gotten a drive with older firmware.

First off if its a firmware issue you should be able to find the firmware somewhere. I got the 7811 faceplate to fit. I can use any of the programs I have (legit or otherwise) to play my BD movies (PowerDVD 7.3 ultra, 8 ultra and Nero 8 Ultra).

Anyone know any model notebooks that come with this drive, we can use this info to search there FTP for the firmware. I also went to the Hitachi + LG website, big joke (then again Sony support). I'm still working on it with Battery918.

I reinstalled everything with no luck. I'm going to try installing an old vistax64 ultimate copy from an oem disc I bought for my whitebox. I'm currius if the drive works before any updates are applied way before sp1.

Don't know how to read the BD-Rom's firmware, if anyone knows please post.

EDIT: Once you have AnyDVD installed you can watch Blu-ray in Media Player Classic (this rocks).

Rep +1 to you man for good info, but I still would like to get it working without AnyDVD HD.

PS Media Player Classic Homecinema works excellent, don't know if it has the codecs needed or if it got them from PowerDVD Ultra. Only thing is you don't have the menus.
