I setup a deal for a supposed 7805u with a WUXGA screen for 925 USD shipped (cheaper because he had no OS with it, long story...). I guess I was stupid for not asking for more specific stat pics, but the guy ended up sending me a 7811.
I'm trying to contact him now, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he made an honest mistake. the 7811 is stilla good laptop, and I guess I wouldn't mind keeping it. How much money do you think I should ask for back? 925 for a 7811 is still good I think...but when you say its a 7805 and then deliver a 7811 I think money should be given back.
Is there a big difference between the 7811 and 7805? I heard the 512 megs of gpu ram isnt even fully used in the 7811, but will future games push the card to its limit and use it? Or is the amount of memory used limited by the gpu clock speed?
Gah I'm not sure what I want to do. What can paypal do for me in this situation?
btw: this 7811 was a preproduction model apparently.....so he claims.... one thing for sure is though, that it is one of the earlier models, it has a finger print reader and bluetooth.

Any warranty on it? Does it work fine? WUXGA screen?
1 GB vs 512mb Video Card not much Performance Different if any at all. -
I'd ask for $75 bucks back.
-
No, theres no warranty on it, but I bought it knowing that there wasn't.
75 bucks thats all you think its worth? I know its still a good deal, but I was expecting a much much better deal. Do you know what I mean? -
Well, with no warranty I think the original purchase price is a bit high.
Tigerdirect had refurbed 7811s in the 750 range or so with no warranty, but on the other hand, I think that 512MB of VRAM is only worth 75-100 bucks. -
it probably is. You're probably miles more tech savvy than I am, but now that I think about it, it makes sense. I mean the cost of a decent card is only a few hundred....how can I expect 512 of vram to cost just as much. I think I'll try asking for 150 to start...since the HDD is 120 gigs smaller as well and the fact that he lied to me! lol
edit: I'm curious, for the tigerdirect refurb price, was it 750 + tax? -
Well, a few reasons to be upset:
-7811 has a high motherboard failure rate, have not heard of this in the 7805u.
-Less VRAM
-Smaller HDD
I would actually start at 200 and take no less than 100 based on everything you've just said.
Was there anything you got but didn't expect (in your favor?) -
Getting any money back from a random gun on a forum is pretty slim unless hes a highly repped member/staff.
-
I do not like the sounds of the high motherboard failure rate........maybe I should just return the thing? what sucks is though, that i payed 150 (CAD) already in import tax fees
-
yea ur pretty stuck on that one, plus thats not a bad deal, its just average to tell you the truth.
You will grow attached to 1440x900, i love it.
OH Canadian, that is a good deal, nevermind, just keep it and be happy, you got a really good deal.
I paid 1200 for my 6860 and it is slightly, barely, inferior to the 7811. -
the screen is actually WUXGA, 1920x1200
edit: oh hey, ontario canada? What up?! I'm from london, you're t.o I'm guessing? -
ps that actually is a very good deal -
A paypal claim would definitely help.
But yeah I didn't realize it was 925 CAD. That's actually a good deal. -
ah ic cool.
It seems like an okay deal...I still have to run some test to make sure it doesn't have heating issues. I just need to wait for vista to update. -
-
You have valid complaints - what was shipped is not what was described, etc.
I've done this once, and gotten all my money back when the other party refused to even respond to PayPal. -
I could also contact my visa for their dispute claims...but if I do this then paypal won't let me use their resolution center. So which should I go for?
-
Start with Paypal, and if paypal fails you go to Visa.
If this guy is a scammer it sounds like you've got companies behind you, you may be able to get all of your money back, and still have the laptop. Depends on how much the guy cooperates. -

that sucks.. I hope it all works out for you.
-
anyone here knows the actual number or just typical nbr esponse. -
. 925USD is a good price for the 7811FX
. yes, the 512MB vram does not make much of a difference
. latest bios would solve (all) the issues that plagued the 7811 in the past
. talk it out with the seller to get to a common agreement/satisfaction BEFORE starting any processes with getting your money back.
. you can also try to get a 3rd party extended warranty, Square Trade comes to mind, but there are others that can perform as well - search the net.
. good lucks
cheers ... -
Some people even purchased 6860's over the 7811 just because of the motherboard issue. -
Their "dispute" process is excellent and based on what you are saying will go in your favor.
Remember, it isn't simply to get your money back. You can say that you are willing to keep the item at a reduced price, for example.
It will be helpful if you can show that the item was supposed to be a 7805, too. -
Well before contacting paypal, try to give the seller some time to respond, it MAYBE POSSIBLE could be settled with him.
I've lost paypal disputes before, but each time I contact my seller they did stuff that paypal dispute refused to do. But that was because I was pretty lucky to get sellers able to work it out. -
yea I've been trying to call this guy.
Thanks everyone for being so informative and supportive. -
yeah i would try to get some money back just because of the HDD the rest idc that much
-
Darn, See I told ya you should've asked more questions
Thats alright, its not like your "Screwed".
Sure he sent you a different model but atleast he didn't send you something FAR off like a Dell Mini 9, right?
What I would do is these steps in these orders:
1) Ask him for the money you want back.
If he doesn't give that...
2) Go through Paypal.
If they can't help you (Which I highly doubt)...
3) Go through Visa.
And if they can't help you...
4) Just keep itIts not like its a terrible system, and for the price its pretty decent. I mean the difference between 200GB and 320GB Drives aren't that much in price, (You make up for that price basically with the bluetooth that you got). And the 512GB extra isn't going to score higher at Resolutions like 1440x900, 1280x800, etc. But the 1GB will slightly out perform the 512GB at 1920x1200 Res.
But your worried about future games... Think of it like this, none of us (7811 AND 7805u users) are going to be using 1920x1200 resolutions because we wont be able to run them comfortably.
Honestly if the system runs well (Run Orthos for a little while to test your CPU, and benchmark/overclock the GPU to its limits to make sure it holds up) than just ask him for some money back for the simple fact that he said it was a 7805u, and you should be set.
Best of luck man. -

I bought my 7811 on day 1, have never once had a problem with over heating or any part failure what-so-ever.
It is a mighty good laptop, and thats not a bad price for it either. A tad bit high perhaps, i'd of sold mine for a little bit less, but thats neither here nor there at this point.
and before anyone goes "if it's so great why you trying to sell yours" It is because I just bought a mac desktop to do my design work, and would like a smaller windows laptop for casual gaming and portability.
Bought a "7805u" over forum, but the guy sent me a 7811!! ARG
