Im gonna have to buy a router first to get my internet going. AFter i unbox it and turn on the thing what am i supposed to do?? I completely have no idea. ~_~ People told me to install drivers(?), do a clean install of vista(?), uninstall bloatwares(?), etc... CAN"T i just turn the thing on and start playing games?? (srry if i sound like a noob =) ) any advice would help ^^

You certainly can just turn the system on and start gaming, but if you want all the extra junk that comes installed removed, a fresh install of vista is usually recommended. The manual will show you how to make a restore cd and when you reinstall vista, it will also give you a option to keep a backup of your previous OS and drivers.

Enjoy the laptop, it's a beast! You don't have to do a clean install of Vista, but it's advised because Vista takes around ~40-50 seconds to start up, and after a clean install, it takes about ~20-30 seconds to boot up. I would recommend creating a back-up disc for your drivers, and etc. This can be found in your instruction manual on page 89.

If you don't mind the bloatware, and loading times being slower, be my guest, and start installing and enjoying those games.

As a side note, a cooler would also be a good investment, because the GPU gets very hot while gaming, ~82-85*C.

Unless you have a dire need for speedy searches, I recommend disabling "Windows Search" at startup. It's a resource hog and loves to thrash the hard drive. You still get search results, just not as fast.

Also, if you have your own malware prevention, I recommend disabling Windows Defender.

    I got mine today, too.

Are you going to fresh install? Are you going to follow orev's guide on doing that without the activation code?

I'd get a P-7811 if I didn't already have a P-6831 with a T-9300 CPU. I'd much rather have the 7811, but I don't know who would want to buy my 6831. I'd sell it cheap as I just want to get rid of it.

Why? Just replace the factory screen with a 1920x1200 screen and call it a day. The 9800GTS is on par with the 8800GTS you already have and your processor is already superior to the installed one. The P8400 is just a bit cooler. Now don't get me wrong, the 7811 is definitely one awesome piece of kit, but IMO, there's no need to take a loss selling your current machine to get the 7811 when all you need to do is upgrade the screen on your 6831.

If you're a newbie, the best thing you can do is just uninstall the programs you don't want. You really don't need to reinstall the OS. The first thing you need to do is make your restore DVD. Once that's done, uninstall any program you don't want. Then use MSCONFIG to stop anything from loading at startup that you don't want loading automagically. You may need to hit the Run keys in the registry as well. After following those steps on my laptop (6860), everything is running very well. If you need more thorough steps on how to do the above, let me know... ;)

restart the computer, and check it again. if that didnt fix it, try this and see if that gets rid of it for you.

What icon didn't go away exactly? If it's something sitting in the system tray, it's loaded into memory and won't go away until you restart, as diablo85 suggests.

    are you talking about the
big fix icon, or the camera icon? those are the only two that are still there on mine.. but i just close them out when i start up because it's really not a big deal to me.

if you go to start-->run-->type in msconfig-->and go to the startup tab, you can uncheck the respective boxes and they wont start up at boot.

Thank you devil, but i know how to use my computer. As i said, i don't mind them being there. However, you should note that when doing it that way in vista you must disable windows defender or you will be met at startup with a balloon that says "start-up programs have been blocked click here to fix etc.."
