After i purchase from BB and open pc and run it how do i.....
check if it is 1920X1200 or 1440x900 AND a LG or AUO LCD make?
check that all specs are correct (ie 4gig ddr3)(9800GTS 1 GIG DDR)(320GIG HD 7200PRM) etc...
I want to make sure I but what I intended spec wise..
How easy is it to swap out the CPU
How easy is it to swap out the LCD (ie get a higher res screen)
I want to run Windows and it comes with Vista...Is it as easy as doing a simple reformat to Windows OS? (is it 32bit or 64bit?)
Thanks so much everyone
-
Sorry if i confused anyone...I guess im asking where the locations are to look for these things when i first boot up...
-
Theres a refurb selling on ebay with 1920x1200 for 989.00
-
To right away knoe if its wuxga/wxga off te box,
Right whn you turn it on and get on setup where you pick your language and stuff. Its a box, if you see a small setup box then you get your self a nice wuxga, if your setup box is big and noiciable like big font size then you get yourself a wxga. Also, you can notice if you go to the part where you see the windows vista logo. If its a big one then you already knoe you have a wxga. If you see a small windows vista logo, its a wuxga. Trust me you will notice it. -
Uhh I doubt you will get a 1900x1200 this late, but you might get really lucky. Putting in a new CPU is relatively easy, as for LCD I wouldnt know, but i assume its harder then the CPU. As for the other stuff, you could run everest home edition to check most of the stuff.
-
Head to Device manager. Click on monitor than double click on Generic Monitor than details tab than look for hardware ids
For other things: start menu than programs than Accessories than system tools than system info
Do you mean windows XP? I would make your recovery dvds first than reformat to what ever OS you want. -
The 7801u is back on sale.
-
Also... you want to run Windows, but the computer has Vista.....
VISTA IS WINDOWS!
any way, if you actually had to ask how to check resolution and wanted Windows over Vista, you shouldn't actually be updating the CPU or the screen your self (sorry if that was rude) -
-
Start, all programs, Gateway, Gateway Recovery
and i don't actually think there was XP drivers, i could be wrong.
That being said, i really think you should get used to vista... it's a great OS -
It was a typo cyber cop... ; )
Ye sI want Windows XP and not the Vista that will come installed..I think my XP disc I have is 32 bit rather than 64 bit...is this ok?
Does everyone agree with this statement below?
"The optimization for 64 bits is clearly a step forward, but momentarily, the only benefit you can obtain by installing this operating system is the possibility of administering more than 4 GB of RAM.
The test pointed out that as long as there isnt a wide range of 64 bit applications, migrating from Windows x32 to Windows x64 is not yet justified, the complications regarding drivers and incompatibility being major disadvantages" -
and there actually can be minor errors when using a 32bit OS with 4gb ram...
but you'll be fine -
I somewhat agree -
unless a specific program that one wants to run will not run on Vista 64, I'd leave it on the system.
If MSI 1039 really feels he needs XP (32), why not set up a dual boot system?
Just a suggestion. -
XP: Start>Run>Type dxdiag
Vista: Start>In the search bar(magnifying glass or whatever it is)>dxdiag -
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
As for what specs on your system, download PCWizard. It will tell you everything. -
Thanks everyone..very helpful
I think i will come to the dark side and keep the vista then...gonna be getting some used to though
What comes installed from BB? Anyone know? Is it sufficient? Im maily getting this laptop for gaming...and occasional music/movies -

-
Oh yes I will for sure be uninstalling a bunch of crap...Im sorry I meant what form of Vista OS comes installed and is it pretty decent?
-
Yeah its decent. Here is a site that can help Vista become much better.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html?filter[11]=Performance%20Maintenance
Some of it maybe too complicated. Just remember you can always reverse them.
Also with Vista Sp2 coming out very shortly it will be improved some more. -
So i just bought it..
They only had 2 at best buy and both serials were 139xxx so I figured it was the 1440x900 plus I doubt there are any 1900x1200's out there this late in production. I can honestly say I prefer the 1440x900 res I got because all I do is game and 1900x1200 is NOT ideal or practical for gaming peformance currently or in the future.
Specs:
1440x900 WXGA AUO (Is there any benefit over having a AUO vs LG screen?)
4GIG DDR3
9800GTS 1GIG DDR3
P8400 2.26
First impressions and questions:
The arrow keys are small (I use them for gaming) kind of annoying
fan doesnt get TOO hot but blows pretty hot as expected
Where does this laptop get its intake air from? the bottom i suppose. I know the exhaust is on the left side of the laptop but what about the vent on the back right side? exhaust or intake?
I deleted most of the crap/bloatware that came with the laptop
I want to take off this gay Ultimate Gaming sticker on the palmrest with the specs and gears of war logo on it. Doesnt seem like a simple peel off and i dont want to scrape or leave a sticky half peel residue if I do peel it off. Any suggestions?
I ran vista updates. It should be up to date. What about nvidia drivers that come with the laptop? I played chronicles of riddick, FEAR 2, Crysis Warhead all at native res on highest settings and all worked well with no problems. Are these OEM drivers that came with the laptop ok and up to date? Is it ok to sick with them or will i benefit from different newer drivers? My philosiphy with drivers is if it isnt brocken dont fix it.
how do I make sure the GPU and CPU are running to the max of their ability? The laptop will always run off AC power so no need to worry about battery saving isses.
I read something about having it in "high performance mode"
Is this just meaning to set the defaults under the battery section and create a power plan chose "high performance" mode or am I missing something?
Lastly,
startup programs
Are the following necessary under startup
-Microsoft windows explorer
-Microsoft userinit Logon application
-Windows defender
-Microsoft windows host process RUNDLL32
-RAID event Monitor
Experieince Index rating was a 5.2
Anything I can do to make sure Vista is running faster and more efficient? -
Oh also...what is a good free program that shows me my CPU and GPU temps at all times..my buddy has one where it sits on his desktop at all times and you can monitor it real time
I would love to see the difference in temps between it dormaint...multitaking...and during gaming. -
Sorry last question!
My C:/Hard drive only states 286GIGS...I thought I have 320GIGS?
Also how do I know its spinning at 7200rpm..anywhere to check this? -
-
I was not looking for a 1920x1200 res and that is not what this post is about. But thanks for answering not one of my questions and rather trolling my post to state that 1920x1200 is ideal for future gaming on this laptop. With technology/games/gaming cards today, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand why 1900X1200 is not ideal for future gaming -
I have read somewhere that these laptops have a Wireless issue right out of the box...I have everything set up perfect with my modem and router and I see my wireless network connection with a strong signal so i chose to connect (i have me wireless switched to the on position) and after i enter the WEP password it will not connect. My girlfriend can connect easily. What gives?
-
It's not the laptop, its either you chose a wrong setting in the wireless guide or you have to change something in the router settings.
And why is 1920x1200 not good for gaming? Ive never once had a problem with this resolution in all my gaming experiences, even with my lower end desktop. -
Thanks!
The router is set up perfectly and my girlfeind jumps on and off seamlessly with her card? I see it in the networks and it has full bars then when i try to connect it asks for a password which im positive it is then it cannot conect?
Regarding my 1920x1200 gaming comment..Im just saying that to push the latest demanding games at the highest settings with a high res such as 1920x1200, lowers the FPS significantly. A mobile 9800GTS cannot handle the latest games maxed out at 1920x1200 res. Its a fact. Esp. not in the future as well. Now the 1440x900 can...but 6 months from now it to may have to drop the settings to medium ; (
A mobile Nvidia 9800M GTS 1 GIG DDR3 GPU runs like a desktop 9600GT -
-
wish it didnt but its reality

Little late but the last couple months I have been using Vista with VMware Workstation. I run xp and ubuntu all on the Vista desktop. Its just like virtual pc but better.
Now that I got W7rc and with the XPM with it Iam excited. XPM frees windows from having to have old version in the kernel. It also gives you a legal version of xp sp3 with it. Im still new to this.
Just a FYI if you want to try it out. VMware would be great for you to learn.
