Hey guys, I've been looking for a laptop and I've decided that I'm going to get one of the Gateway P Series. Link
I'm thinking that I'm going to go with the P-172X FX since I want this laptop to last me awhile and the built-in extras on the FX tempt me quite a bit. I just had a couple of questions before I submit the order tomorrow.
Is the FX worth the extra price and does anyone know if there's a better deal out there for the same price? Is the 172 series as upgradeable as the P-6860's (CPU is mainly what I'm looking at)?
Is this laptop a pain to carry around? Since I'll be using my Desktop at home I'm basically using this whenever I'm at work/school.
And lastly, is the support on the P series good? I'd go with a business grade laptop for the support, but I don't know how the Quadros compare to the Geforces.
Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions!

*if you are only use it for work and school, maybe you should get yourself a 15"
*order it through phone, you might able to get a discount
*172 is basically identical with p-6860fx
*better to carry it in backpack than notebook bag
*if you are using it for CAD and expect business class of customer support, get a thinkpad. -
I'm going to be using it for multimedia applications, which is why I want a good graphics card, plus I'm going to want this laptop for 4 years at least. Will an 8600/8700GT or an ATI 2600 HD work for that long and continue to play games at least semi-well?
-
8700m gt and ati 2600 won't last you 4 years for decent gaming, 8800m gts will.
-
Alright, last thing, any tips on how to get a discount through the phone?
-
Offer them your hot sister's/mom's phone number for a hook up?
They were giving discounts back in the day but recently they have been getting stingy. Seeing how they get money taken out of their pocket when they cut you slack. Just tell them your in the military and both hands and feet were blown off in DerkaDerkastan. You plan on playing crysis by taping a pen to your nose, cheeks and forehead.
Good luck! -
Nothing like invading a country then mocking it once you get your ass kicked.
-
Not that I support the invasion in any way, but from a purely militaristic point of view the U.S. is in no way "getting its ass kicked."
-
Ya and in a purely militaristic point of view, the US didnt get its ass kicked in Vietnam either.
As much as many American leaders might think so, the world isnt one dimensional =)
I just hope Obama doesnt turn out the same way. -
i like that
-
back on topic.
as to discount find a comparable laptop from a different brand with a little cheaper price (???), tell them that if they can beat that price you order right now.
other wise go with p-6860 from BestBuy on good days it goes down to 1099$ -
i got a hp on july 4 for 699, and i am not happy with it.. so on july 9 i went and returned. i think gateway is really has great price at 1k-15k... and upgradeable too... i am getting it soon
-

Who the Hell brought up Vietnam anyway? And as far as "the invasion" goes ask any military troops who've actually fought there what they think. You'll hear it's going just fine.
Sounds like you're from outside the U.S. I hope that's the case, because if you aren't you should be damn ashamed. Show a little compassion for those who risk their lives, and the troops who didn't make it out (not to mention their families). Go tell them that they are risking their lives for a useless cause.
It's hard to tell just how Obama will turn out. I don't think he's stuck with one decision he's made.
Let's keep the snide remarks to yourself from now on please. -
Let's keep the stupid political talk out of notebook forums, all of you. There was no need to bring it up, and there is to need to rebut.
I don't remember this section being called "Gateway, Emachines, and Political Standings". -

Very true, those were first thoughts and then I discarded them. Sorry about that, I was a little ticked off to say the least. -
provoking and being provoked are not that far

Add mediating in there as well as dwelling. Oh wait now I'm a pot. -
No problems, just seen many a threads turn sour due to either 3 things-
Money
Religion
Politics
All is well though, hopefully the P-172 works out for the OP! -
