    1. Can the BIOS see the optical drive? Can you boot the Windows disc?

    2. Is the optical drive listed in Device Manager (under DVD/CD-ROM drives).

    3. If not, try uninstalling the IDE channels under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers then reboot and let Windows redetect the hardware (first the IDE channels and then any attached devices).

    4. If Device Manager lists the drive then can you see the list of files on a disc in Windows Explorer?

    does it appear normal in device manager? or does it have a yellow " ! " on it?

    if either applies, try uninstalling it, reboot, let windows create drivers and then update the drivers after windows creates the generic ones.

    also, do you know if you are getting the error 39 issue? a common known issue is the error 39 code in vista, which is a simple registry fix:

    click start, type regedit in the search box, press enter

    locate this registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    ***you are gonna go through a couple folders till you reach {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}***

    once you find it, do the following:

    in the right side window pane, delete the Upperfilters and the Lowerfilters

    exit registry, reboot and all should be good

    hope this helps
