I just got this 6860 and the CD player is making some grinding sounds when I use it. I have the CD in there to install, and while its spinning around its smooth, but when it slows down or initially starts up it makes this noticeable grinding sound.

There hasn't been any damage to the CD's I've put in or anything, but it doesn't sound good. And I don't want it to deteriorate and die in a year or so.

Thanks for any info or help!

You may be hearing the optical reader/writer moving. :)

Try just opening the drive then closing it and see if you hear the noise (without a cd)

seems like the noise has stopped pretty much now.

Perhaps it was just a new drive needing to do some aligning since it got a bit miffed in the shipping to the Bestbuy store. Who knows. I'll see if it does it again soon. Hopefully not. :)

I think that's normal. A similar noise happens on mine for around 10-20 seconds when I put in a DVD/CD and or longer if I am installing a game.
