Doing a couple of mods to my 7805u to improve cooling after a X9100 installation.

    - 12x copper blocks (aka mini VGA/RAM heatsink) epoxied onto body of CPU heatsink with AS5 thermal adhesive

    - 11m x 11mm copper shim mod (0.9mm thickness) to northbridge

    - increase number of ventilation holes so that my Cryo LX blows cold air directly to the copper blocks to increase heat dissipation.

one of the mods involves drilling vent holes. Just wondering what purpose (if any) does the thin metal sheet attached to the backpanel serve? I've always assumed it to be some form of heat and/or electrical shielding.

in any case, i want to remove it to make my drilling task a lot easier.

    advice? Cheers.

My advice is leave it because in a year or so you might want to sell the laptop, Is your heating problem still that bad?

Chances are the back panel is for electrical shielding, but removing it should not be a major problem.

this laptop is gonna see me through my PhD so i need it to last lol.

it's gonna stay with me even after i upgrade hence the drilling.

are you sure you need all this? I just got an X9100 and its running almost same temps as my P7350.

Its an electrical shield, and in 99.99999999% of the world isn't needed, but its there because every now and then it is required so removing it will be fine up to the point where its needed then you might accidentally fry something.

Now to another point... i think your CPU is cursed and you should really look into getting another one. I know that is an expense that you shouldn't have to deal with but you could sell yours to someone with a clevo and it would run fine with their insane block of copper cooling system.

But with the gateways we have good cooling but not over the top that can handle a hot running CPU.

I really hate you are having so much trouble out of that CPU :(

Incidentally, putting the 7805u (without the backpanel) back on my Cryo LX significantly dropped my temps, much in line with what other X9100 users have previously reported.

    currently idling on SLFM 6.0x @ 1.000v on 30*C and 37*C on 11.5x @ 1.125v

Having said that, my heatsink does have the 12 copper heatsinks epoxied onto it which would increase the (heated) surface area exposed to the Cyo LX's fans. Hopefully, by drilling the vent holes in the backpanel, i can get the best of both worlds; i'm not too keen to leave my 7805u's innards open for too long.
