I just bought a Gateway UC7308U from Office Depot on sale and was curious what the fastest CPU I could upgrade this machine to. It currently has a T3400 in it.

    Processor Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core T3400 Mobile Processor1 (2.16GHz, 667MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache)5

    Running Vista Home Premium

    Thanks!

That is a really nice chart but still not sure how to determine the best CPU I can put in this laptop. I'm assuming I would have to have one with the same FSB (667MHz). What else is a limiting factor?

Could I use this one for example?

This sure was a hell of a lot easier 10-15 years ago....

It is based off of your motherboard type. You have the gm45 chipset.

It will use the P series, Like P8400, P8600, and so on. Some of the T series will work aswell. I believe the GM45 is the 1066 FSB, stick with 45nm Penryn type processors, less heat. Just remember the more power the more heat.. Hope that helps..

Why do you want to upgrade the processor? If it's because of gaming, the integrated graphics accelerator is not gonna cut it-

Not gaming on this one. Using it mostly for video editing, burning camcorder video to DVDs, etc. Its slow and the CPU meter is pegged at 100% most of the time when doing this.

Will I need to upgrade my RAM as well? Has a couple sticks of 667MHz DDR2 in it.

What video editing software do you use?

Also, have you optimized your OS?

If you've done these and you're still experiencing slowdown, then go ahead, upgrade your cpu---

There are plenty of cpus on ebay-- I believe the P9600, T9600, T9800, T9900, X9100 (double check this one) are compatible with your GW UC7308U.
The T9600 is the best bang for the buck--

    P9500 would work--

T9600 is the best bang for the buck for the same price-

    Try ebay--

Quite frankly, I would never spend that much money on a processor upgrade. I think most of us here bite the bullet and buy from eBay instead. For that amount, you're better off returning the laptop and get a better spec'ed one for a bit more money--

If you're going to insist on Newegg, think about it--

    $499 + $359 = $858

    or

    $499 + $549 = $1048

I think the better questions to ask yourself is,

    - What are my real needs and expectations for a laptop?
    - Does my one current satisfy it?
    - If not, what are my options?

I think most vendors have figured out how to pressure consumers on buying new vs. upgrading, especially when buying from name brands. This is how they get you. You may think you're getting a bargain, but if you decide to upgrade, it may have been better to have spent it on something that would actually let you do what you want, instead on skimping, then ending up paying the same or more for a less capable product--

It may seem at first to be a penny wise, and but may end up being a pound foolish.
