OK, I have noticed that a lot of people are posting the temps of their CPU, GPU and hdd. What program are all of yall using to get this info? I can't find a program that does all that.
So basically what I am asking is. What (preferably free) program do I need to find the temps of my CPU, GPU, and hdd?
Any help would be awesome, Thanks

HWMonitor shows all of it. Unless the specific piece of hardware does not have a built in temperature sensor.

Sometimes not all programs reports the same readings, there are other options available if you want a second opinion. Have a look over at NBR Cooling Central.

Ok... Wow I just noticed a horrible thing with my temps.
Ok, I have a fan under my P172sFx I built it right into the table because, I like to hang out outside on my back porch and it gets hot out here some days. Anyway I looked at my temps as soon as downloaded the hwmonitor. They were as follows
core# 0 44 degrees C
core# 1 43 degrees C
gpu 55 degrees C
Ok now those are at no load. So I turned off the fan. The went up a couple of degrees and thats what I expected. So I turned back on the fan. Tilted the computer up and took off the cpu and memory cover, it probably took 30 seconds to remove the cover. Laid the notebook back down opened it up and BOOM!
core# 0 83 degrees C
core# 1 83 degrees C
gpu 64 degrees C
See what I mean?! That is a major spike in temps! Oh forgot to mention I did not turn the comp upside down i just lifted it to a 90 degree angle, to remove the back cover. I have tilted it up like that before and it would shut itself off. so now I know why it shut off. But why is it getting so hot? What can I do to fix it? Or is this one of those problems you got to send to Gateway? -
This sounds like the same problem I experienced on the t-1631 I had. I didnt know it was carrying over to the other models as well. Yikes.
The ones that had the problems so far, have all been equipped with Turions. This is the first I have heard of it doing it on a C2D. -

You are correct dtwn, I just realized which one he was talking about and removed that line right before you posted.
And yes, that also went through my mind as well, but I have done the same thing when I was testing the 1631, with the 6860 and it never spiked like that. Theoretically, a laptop should maintain the same temp no matter what position its in.
However, that being said, he did have the back off, which breaks the air stream within the laptop, so that very well could be why. -

As far as whether or not it does it with the back on or off, it does it no matter what. I have spent the better half of the day testing this.
With the back off, and not running any program. = heat spike
with the back on, and not running any program.= heat spike
HOWEVER! it will only do it if it is sitting hinges down, if I flip it and rest it with the hinges up, it stays fine. So the only thing I can think it is, is some kinda loose connection.
I want to send it back to Gateway, but then again thats how you get refurbished parts. So I am in a pickle. If I just never tilt it up. It might slowly progress to hardware failure. So what should I do? -
Yeap. Thats pretty much the same problem people are experiencing with the T-Series. What happens at, say a 45degree angle? Do you still get somewhat of a spike?

I tilt the notebook up. Say your using your notebook, you close it, then you tilt the front up until it is 90 degrees to the table. Stand it up on its battery.
Any way here is the table I modified with a fan. 120mm variable speed. I have the control knob mounted on the desk also. It does a wonderful job of keeping the temps down.
What are the danger zone temps for the Gateway P172s FX?
More appropriately what are the danger zone temps for the t5750 core 2 duo

You're still at safe temps, even while tilted.
For example, the Asus G1S goes up to 100 or so C gaming and they work. Not very healthy for the laptop certainly, but it'll work.
If I recall correctly, GPU temps are about 85, CPU's are at 100 or so. It'll still work beyond that, but it's not very healthy. -
Thats a sweet setup ya got there. Question. The fan is set to draw hot air away from the laptop right? Not blow air up into it correct? I'm just askin is all... -
The TDP on the T5750 is 100C and I love that table!

the fx notebook air intakes are on the bottom while the outtakes are on lest side and rear, i would think he would rather blow air to his notebook (as any cooling pad do) than from it.

I have the fan blowing air up to the bottom of the notebook because the intakes are on the bottom. I figured it would cool the notebook down better. Which it does. If you pull the air away from the bottom, your just counteracting with the fans airflow. Also with the fans blowing up it circulates air in the hdd bay so the temps in there drop a couple of degrees. I was going to build a notebook cooler but there were several design problems with the amount of air I was wanting to move, compared to the thickness of the actual cooler. I didn't want it to be more than an 1 1/2" tall in the back and that didn't allow enough air to the back of the fan. The Pic down there is a google sketch of my original notebook cooling design.

I agree, notebook coolers these days arent as efficient in cooling due to lack of proper airflow. Beatiful table you have.
If you lift most notebook coolers off the surface by 5-10cm's, it can suck in alot more air thus expelling more air into your notebook.
Also if you raise the notebook itself from the pad by 1cm the air can flow through your notebook, dissipate heat and exit freely. Some coolers make the notebook sit ontop of the fan giving no exit flow.
I noticed an average of 4c improvement by using a cooler + high profile stand -
Yes, I discovered that same phenomenon. Thats why I have my notebook jacked up on staple boxes. They are the perfect height.

I can feel my notebook coolers breeze from where im sitting. 20cm fan, 30c temps ftw
I put my AC power brick and external HDD's below to cooler so it sucks the hot air out of them. -
i might do that to my table, thanks for the pics, thats a really nice table. I am having alot more success today. Using the wPrime stability test i got a max of 72C so far, UVed to 1.1375 @ 2.6.

Thanks Dook! As you can see I got some liquid nails on the face of the control knob. I will remove it when I get motivated enough. The fan model is a IPCQueen it works quite well and is very quiet. I also found that a 12 volt DC, AC adapter at 200mA powers it perfectly.

sweet desk set up.
I never could find a cooler for the 6860 either so i built my own.
Heres the 1/2 way done pics. I still have to router out the air vents a bit and polish up the cables to hide them better...then its a nice coat of paint and done.
It works really well because the fans are right under the vents on the bottom of the 6860
Eventually i'm going to have to redesign it to make it smaller and lighter...and put grills on the bottom to protect the fans. But in any case i'm happy how its coming along

Shes not to happy about losing her bed try, but its better than messing with her cooking utensils (my life wouldnt have went much further had i dont that)
I think the way its set up in the pic ended up costing me about 40 bucks counting the 4 fans and the tray. Tray was like 16-20 and the fans came from POS tagrus notebook coolers that i took apart.
The next design i do believe i'm going to use desktop fans in a bamboo sandwitch (as i was stating in another thread) to see if i can cancle the noise probelm i had with them just sitting on top. If not i'll probably sandwich it anyway for the weight reduction and figure out a way to power it better. USB fans are nice, but i would like a bit more cooling if i'm going to keep it around for a while.
And the upside my wife gets her table back...with a few extra holes mind you... but back none the less
